Gaining momentum, building community

By Steve Skonieczny, President
Thank you to everyone who came out to our first meeting! We have many events planned for the year--some community-building fundraisers, and a number of trips for students--and it's encouraging that many stepped up and volunteered to help out. As a founding member of FORESMA and the parent of an eighth-grade trumpet player who will be moving on next year, it's good to know that the work we have put into supporting the growth of a successful music program will continue on into the future.

Our first community building-fundraiser is a dance fitness class taught by RESMS parent Medora Cesarano at Community Fitness on Roosevelt Way. This is a great opportunity for families to meet in a fun, informal setting while getting a good workout. Other events our volunteers are working on include a dine-out night at the RAM at Northgate mall, a drumlline class for parents, and a boxing fitness class at a gym in Greenwood.

Planning these events is a minimal time commitment and a great way to get a sense of what it takes to support the music program. Where we could still use some volunteer help is in planning the big trips in the second half of the year. Planning for the Silverwood and Wildwaves trips asks more of our volunteers, but since those trips don't happen until spring, getting started now is a great way to spread out the workload. Questions or ideas about volunteering: send mail to

Another great way to lighten the load is to team up with a friend or come to our next meeting and meet some other parents who may be interested in helping. Even if you don't have time to spare for these projects, coming to our monthly meeting and lending your voice to the discussions is always appreciated. Many hands make light work.

Dance for fitness and FORESMA

This one-hour class will be tailored for adults and students and is open to everyone.
Medora will be teaching her signature dance fitness format “Dance Club” -- an easy-to-follow, high-intensity workout set to a variety of favorite hip hop, old school, and Top 40 hits. Each song is personally choreographed to put a smile on your face and keep your heart pumping!
Medora brings broad expertise to her classes and students from her extensive background in dance and fitness. She has coached college dance teams, performed professionally on NBA dance teams, and coached WNBA hip hop dance teams in Portland, Oregon. Through her extensive background she is able to share a wealth of knowledge and skills with her students. From the moment class begins, expect to be entertained, educated, and engaged.

Parents Night Out at Lantern Brewing

Robert Eagle Staff PTSA is joining up with FORESMA for a Parents Night Out at Lantern Brewing (938 North 95th St.) on Thursday, Oct. 18, starting at 7:00. A dollar from each pint benefits FORESMA, so bring your friends! Kids are also allowed at this family-run taproom.

Lantern Brewing was the site of the inaugural FORESMA event in the summer of 2017, and we’re grateful for support from owners Chris and Lori Engdahl. Especially now that their Raven is an Ingraham Ram.

Pro tip: they open at 4:00, and will be donating $1 per pint until closing at 10:00. After-work ale with the office buddies? Just a thought.
