Soaring Above
By Steve Skonieczny, FORESMA President

One thing I have learned about the Robert Eagle Staff music community is that we are always ready to meet a challenge. Every time the board comes together to talk about how we can raise the money to support everything that our music program needs to be successful we are never sure what to expect. As a new program, we don't have a track record of fundraising to look back on to see what works best nor a comprehensive understanding of our community to know how much we can ask for.  Throughout the year we have explored many ways reach out to our community for help. Some methods are tried and true such as the bake sales and Chinook Book sales. Other events focused on building community such as the Oktoberfest, the Drumline class for Adults, and the Power Hour Boxing class. Finally, we put forth a direct-ask campaign. Every time we have presented one of these plans to the community, you have risen to the challenge and often exceeded our goals. For this, I would like to thank everyone in the community who have given generously of their time and money to make the music program at Robert Eagle Staff a success.

Our challenge now as we go forward is to keep up the energy and enthusiasm for making this a great music program for the school and one that can be looked upon by others as an example of what can be done when we come together and work as a community.

Of Wonderland and Music of the Sea
Gavin Hayes, REMS Choir Director

"In my recent absence we choose to cancel our April 24th field trip. There has not been enough enthusiasm for performance at this stage in our learning. Students have voted to wait on the public performance experience until the end of the year.

Our upcoming choir performance will produce a CD to represent this year's choirs and a concert to space!  This will be in recognition of the first West Coast launch mission to Mars this May!

Raven Choir will conclude with a traditional choir concert, performing, "Music of the Sea." This is TBD in tandem with the Alice in Wonderland Jr. schedule! AiWjr looks and sounds fantastic thus far as they make full use of our wonderful stage!Every day I am amazed at what these students are capable of doing together!

Everything I do here is dependent on the quality teaching of others and I am happy to be at Robert Eagle Staff; what we really need is to continue the tradition of choir and singing to build not only the musical theater tradition but the choir tradition as well. This will lead to not only an award winning band and orchestra, but also an award winning musical and choir program.  To aid in this, I will extend my endorsement as a Music Educator to Robert Eagle Staff Middle School as a Choir/Musical Focused Music Honorarium to honor and extend value of the work students have produced in my classes and in the musical theater production. I am honored to be selected as an Honorarium Advisor this Spring!"

Accelerandos
Lindsey Dustin, REMS Orchestra Director

Congrats to all orchestra students on a successful Spring concert! Our next concert at RESMS is June 12 and will also feature our guitar class.
Beginning orchestra students are making tremendous progress, now playing pieces with syncopated rhythms and advanced key signatures.

Intermediate orchestra performed at our region's middle school orchestra festival, and received all "Superior" ratings!
Junior and Senior orchestras are finalizing their repertoire choices for their upcoming Silverwood trip on May 18-20.
Guitar students can now play on all 6 strings and at 6+ chords.  We are currently finishing up a composition project and will soon begin choosing songs for our June performance.

Band Beat
John Aguilar, REMS Band Director, shared these thoughts at our last FORESMA meeting.

REMS Jazz Band took 3rd place at the University of Portland Jazz Festival. That’s impressive for being the only non-auditioned group in the top three. This Spring break trip went “surprisingly smooth” and John had terrific chaperones at his back who get lots of credit for that.  The bonding that happens on these trips, John explained, is so important to an ensemble. He hopes to take his musicians to the Idaho State University Jazz Festival in Boise next year, which has more learning opportunities and notable evening performances.

Additionally, Mr. Aguillar hinted that he may have something else up his sleeve and we’re sure it will be great. For now, please know that the Marching Raven's will be representing at Ballard's Syttende Mai parade. A Swing Dance is set for June 2nd, which will include music from outside talents and REMS, possibly dance lessons, and definitely a cake auction.

Build for the Future!
By Andrea Frank

Whatever you are doing right now, you have our permission to stand up, smile grandly, wave hands in the air and proclaim, with your best Oprah-esque voice, “Senior Orchestra gets sheet muuu-sic! Jazz Band gets sheet music!  You get sheet music and you get sheet music  Every. Music. Class. Gets sheet muuu-sic!”

Our 'Build for the Future'  campaign exceeded our goal by bringing in at least $10,000, with some corporate matching funds still to come. That’s not all sheet music. From festivals, transportation, instruments, and fee scholarships to preparing for next year, you are making these a reality.

THANK YOU!

To our FORESMA 'Build for the Future' co-ordinators, Brooke Doyle, Roxanne Kennison, Steve Skonieczny, Judy Nelson, Lindsey Dustin, John Aguilar and Laura Tiberio- THANKS for making it so easy.

Luckily for us, sheet music is printed on paper now.

A special thank you to Eric Olson who came out and recorded the performances even as his student was out sick.

Local and over-night chaperones deserve our applause. Particularly hard at work are our Silverwood Lead Organizers: Angel Hackman, Barb McKague, Nora Paille, Krissie Depew. Thank you for stepping up to assist students in our absence!
