My Secret Astoria

Oregon show with new Marie Powell art open now

'Memories of Royal's Place'

Royal Nebeker's art studio has long loomed large in my own private Astoria, a place of roughhewn inspiration and gritty authenticity. "Big Red", as it was known, was a Norwegian net shed perched precariously on large pilings over the mighty Columbia River. Royal's words took on the strength of the water flowing underfoot as he spoke powerfully about the place and his work.

"Memories of Royal's Place", my newest mixed-media piece, represents an abstract collection of memories gleaned from visiting "Big Red". See the full piece below

It's among the juried selections at "My Secret Astoria", an Astoria Visual Arts Members Show at RiverSea Gallery open through Feb. 5.

My Secret Astoria

New artwork pays homage to legendary studio

I felt very privileged the day Royal Nebeker invited a few of us art students to his private art studio above the Columbia River in Astoria, Ore.

Seeing his work environment and the large canvases in various stages of completion was truly inspiring; listening to him describe his feelings for the place and his work was truly brilliant.

I'll always remember that experience and the unique and wonderful "Big Red".

In this mixed piece, I've abstractly assembled bits and pieces from my joyful memories of Royal's place, where his spirit undoubtedly lives on.

Creating art in New Zealand

Here I am hard at work at the TeKowhai Print Trust Studio in Whangarei, New Zealand on a hot summer day … well, summer for us at least!

This original print will be used as a preliminary layer for future images to be laid over it. I love the color!

Enjoying the New Year in NZ

What better way to kick off a new year than brunch with your sweetheart! Randy and I enjoyed brunch at The Quay, one of our favorite restaurants in Whangarei that offers a gorgeous setting right next to the yacht basin. Cheers!

Another Happy Customer

John and Sallianne Howell of the Vancouver area have not one, but two of my "Crows" pieces hanging in their beautiful home. We had so much fun delivering the artwork and then were absolutely thrilled when they shared this photo with us on Facebook.
