Capturing the Spirit

Marie Powell , Penny Treat in Astoria exhibit Oct. - Nov.

Opening reception is Oct. 13; show runs to Nov. 7

Fellow Port of Ilwaco artist Penny Treat, from ArtPort Gallery, and myself are participating in an art exhibit at RiverSea Gallery in Astoria, Ore., titled "Spirits of the Ancients". The opening reception is Oct. 13, and the show runs through Nov. 7. Everyone is invited!

The exhibit highlights the Pacific Northwest's revered forests and trees. Nature is often my most-trusted muse, and the coastal forests of Washington offer a steady stream of inspiration. See how it all comes together between Oct. 13 and Nov. 7 in Astoria. See you there!

Final Art Walk is Oct. 5

Last hurrah features about 20 locations

The final Ilwaco Art Walk of the season is Oct. 5, and it'll be a must-visit event! Featuring about 20 businesses between downtown, the port and the edge of the state park, the Art Walk showcases the very best of Ilwaco. Gather your friends and loved ones and make an evening of it!

NEW in the Gallery

Abstract Monotypes

New monotypes, including the pieces "Journey" and "Silhouette" shown here, are on display and available in the gallery.

Fall back to Fall-Winter hours

It's that time of year again -- the gallery has moved to fall-winter hours. We're now open Friday-Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We can also open the gallery by appointment if you call ahead. Reach the gallery at (360) 244-0800.

Happening Around Town

Happy birthday, Randy!

Wishing a very happy (and slightly belated) birthday to Randy Powell, who celebrated another trip around the sun on Sept. 4. Make sure to wish Randy a happy birthday next time you see him!

If you don't find him in the gallery then he's probably out and about near North Head Lighthouse walking his favorite trails.

Cranberrian Fair is Oct. 13-14

The Cranberrian Fair held in Ilwaco and Long Beach celebrates the Peninsula's annual cranberry crop and honors the berry's southwest Washington heritage. The event is split between the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco and the Cranberry Museum in Long Beach with a trolley running between the two. The fair features crafts, vendors and treats, including the ever-popular cranberry-peach pies. Craft demos include rug hookers and a blacksmith.

Another Happy Customer

Here's a recently sold piece of mine hanging in its new home in Scotland! Proud owners Bob and Helen Martin said: "We thought you might like to see the monotype we bought in July, now framed and taking pride of place in our home in Scotland. We're delighted with it."

Do you have an original Marie Powell piece taking pride of place in your home? Send a photo to marie@marie-powell.com. We'll feature it on Facebook and maybe in an e-news!

Storm-watching HQ

Storm-watching season is just about here, and nowhere puts on a show like Waikiki Beach in Cape Disappointment State Park. The usually tranquil beach transforms into a place of tremendous energy as giant waves explode beneath the gaze of 162-year-old Cape Disappointment Lighthouse.  Read more about storm watching.

Coastal cranberries

Can't make it to the Cranberrian Fair on Oct. 13-14? No worries -- there are plenty of ways to celebrate the local cranberry crop. You can buy fresh cranberries by the pound, sip a cranberry cocktail or score 100% pure cold-pressed cranberry juice from a local purveyor to craft your own cran concoction. Our local Visitors Bureau has tips for enjoying the bounty.

Featured Art: '354 Salmon'

With the summer-fall salmon fishing season wrapping up I thought this piece was especially timely. "354 Salmon" is an oil-ink monoprint in a beautiful dark wood frame behind museum glass. You'll want to see this colorful, multi-layered piece in person to truly appreciate it.
