Dr. Marya Gwadz Awarded $2.3M NIH Grant to Support COVID-19 Testing in Underserved and Vulnerable Populations

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded Dr. Gwadz and collaborators from NYU Silver, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, and Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation a two-year, $2.3 million grant to use the multiphase optimization strategy (MOST) framework to optimize an intervention to address the challenge of insufficient COVID-19 testing among Black and Latino frontline essential workers. The new study is part of the NIH’s RADx® initiative to speed innovation in the development, commercialization, and implementation of technologies for COVID-19 testing.

Dr. Ifrah Magan Awarded Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Equity Scholars for Action Grant

Over the course of the two-year study, Dr. Magan will work with Rohingya refugees from Myanmar living in Chicago, using a critical ethnographic method to illuminate the particular mechanisms through which refugee-led community organizations impact the overall health outcomes, mental health, and healing processes of individuals and families in refugee communities.

Study Finds Precarious Parental Employment Is Increasing the Likelihood of Childhood Poverty

As Congress debates a major social relief package that could ease the financial impact of raising a family in America, a study led by Dr. Wen-Jui Han found that children of parents with precarious employment are facing a significantly higher chance of falling into poverty during their developmentally critical first six years of life.

Dr. Michael A. Lindsey Elected to AASWSW Board

A noted scholar in the field of child and adolescent mental health, as well as a leader in the search for knowledge and solutions to generational poverty and inequality, Dr. Lindsey has been elected to the board of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW). He has been an AASWSW Fellow since 2021.

NYU Silver Partners with South Bronx Families and Community to Promote Youth Well-Being

Through SAMHSA funded projects on which they are Principal Investigators, Drs. Lance Keene and Jennifer Manuel launched the Bronx Family Coalition for Health, which operates on the ground in the South Bronx, supporting the health and well-being of the community’s youth and working with families to prevent underage drinking, substance use, unplanned pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections.

In Social Work: A Call to Action – A Time for Reflection and Reckoning, Dr. Linda Lausell Bryant and Philip Coltoff challenge social work practitioners, educators, and the profession as a whole to embrace the activism and leadership inherent in social work’s core values in order to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movement for racial justice, the erosion of democracy, and other pressing challenges of our turbulent times. All proceeds from the book’s sale will go to the scholarship fund for the School’s Adaptive Leadership Fellowship for second year MSW students.

Recognizing our Newest Faculty Antiracism Pedagogy Champions

In fall 2021,19 NYU Silver faculty and doctoral students completed the second cohort of the School’s Faculty Antiracism Pedagogy Seminar, joining 54 who completed the first cohort as Silver Antiracism Pedagogy Champions. The rigorous, ten-week training program was developed and led by Drs. Doris F. Chang and Linda Lausell Bryant.

In Case You Missed It: Silver Data Science and Social Equity Center Inaugural Event

In November, our Constance and Martin Silver Center on Data Science and Social Equity held a provocative inaugural event, at which Dr. Marya Gwadz introduced the center’s work and vision and keynote speaker Dr. Desmond Upton Patton of Columbia School of Social Work discussed the role of social work in AI and data science.

NYU Silver’s Student Affairs team, including our Office of Inclusive Engagement & Student Life, Office of Career & Professional Development, and Student Ombuds, host programming, cultivate student leadership, and provide personalized support across all four of our campuses.
