  Stem rust
A number of new varieties including long season wheats not included in the Cereal Variety Disease Guide 2018 or SA 2018 Sowing Guide are susceptible or very susceptible to stem rust. Whilst this disease has not been a problem in recent years, the threat from an increased area sown to susceptible varieties is real and growers should be aware of the risks posed by these varieties particularly where they are grown through the summer months allowing a green bridge between seasons. Fungicides are not as effective on stem rust as they are on other rusts and the disease can develop very rapidly where conditions are favourable.
