I'm pleased to bring you a snapshot of some of the work I have been doing here in Sydney...

Council Transparency

As many of you know, I have been campaigning for the live streaming of Sydney Council meetings since I was elected. I am pleased that the Government has decided to include mandatory live streaming of all Council and Committee meetings in the 'Consultation Draft of the new Model Code of Meeting Practice for Local Councils in NSW'.

However under sections 5.18, 5.19 and 5.20, the recording and making available past recordings of meetings is not implicit.

Last week I wrote to Minister Gabrielle Upton MP to request that an amendment be made to these clauses so that not only do Councils have to live stream meetings, but they must also store and make available past meetings online. It was not my intention through my campaign to make this practice optional.

I'm certain that councils like the City of Sydney would read the provision literally and not provide past meetings for viewing at a later date. After all, Clover Moore has been opposed to transparency up until now - why would she want to let people see how she runs the Council meetings?

I will keep you posted.

Small Business Marathon

I popped down to Chinatown for a Small Business Marathon with the President of the Australian DongGuan Chamber of Commerce Justin Chan. I always enjoy spending time with the wide variety of businesses that operate in this district.

Small Business is the lifeblood of the economy and the businesses around Chinatown are especially resilient. It has been a tough couple of years for many of them with the Light Rail construction and disruption on George Street as well as various other road works on their doorsteps.

It is important that the City of Sydney considers the impacts of these developments on small businesses so that they can remain viable as our city grows.

Moya's Juniper Lounge

I enjoyed visiting Charlie at Moya's Juniper Lounge in Redfern and hearing about the exciting equipment upgrades planned to improve the sound for their weekly Jazz Sessions on Tuesday and Sunday nights.

With these new improvements, this venue will continue to be a great contribution to live music entertainment in Sydney

Chris O'Brien Lifehouse

It was a privilege to visit the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Centre and see the amazing work being done by some incredibly dedicated people. I was struck by the empathy, care, and complete patient focus given by everyone from the CEO Eileen Hannagan through to the nurses, doctors, volunteers and of course, the inimitable Gail O'Brien.

Lifehouse Centre provides holistic cancer treatment to thousands of Australians every year - cancer clinics, surgery, education and research and clinical trials and a cryobank of research samples. I couldn't be prouder of the work they do.

See more of the wonderful things they do

Homeless Memorial Service

Last week I attended the Homeless Memorial Service hosted by Wesley Mission, for Homelessness Week 2018. The memorial service was a stark reminder to us all that life on the street is tough.

I met one person who has lost three friends in the past month or so and whilst we don't have much research on the link between homelessness and mortality, it doesn't take much imagination to understand how bleak it is, especially for rough sleepers

Chinese Television 'CCTV'

It was a pleasure to be interviewed for Chinese Television, 'CCTV', about the work we do in Sydney. I talked about the incredible contribution migrants have made to Australia and about the wonderful multicultural city that we live in.

It was a privilege to be able to tell some of the journey of my family as well. My great grandfather came to Sydney from DongGuan in Guangdong China in 1882 and settled in the Rocks. I am blessed that my ancestors chose Australia and I am blessed to live in such a wonderful city.

Charlie's Garden

Thank you David for showing me around Charlie's Garden in Darlington. As I have a fond interest in gardening, I enjoyed the tour and hearing the exciting plans for the redesign and rebuild.

It was great to see school children and local residents visiting the garden and using it as a spot to catch up or to collect some produce. It shows how important a shared garden space is for the local community.

The Drum

At one of my recent appearances on ABC's The Drum, we discussed the hot topics of the Drought in NSW, Reusable Plastic Bags and privacy concerns for Myhealthrecord. I always enjoy the opportunity to participate on this panel to share and hear opinions about current issues.
