Social anxiety, the dread and phobia of interacting with other humans,
is a pesky and isolating companion that wants to keep us to itself.
How can we re-center and reframe it as a lesson to learn and grow from?

Dear you,

This is precisely why I chose this topic for the Moon Times this month: it's real, it's alive in me and in so many others, and it genuinely sucks because it's isolating, muting, and mystifying.

At the same time, I have deep faith and some evidence that anxiety, specifically and most relevantly to me, the social variety, is a lesson we might need and something to intentionally grow from. Can we can learn to speak over it, live with it, laugh at it, and love it? Okay, maybe not all the way- but in my research, I learned that people who experience social anxiety also have a high degree of empathy. And when highly-sensitive empaths are out and about in the world, it's no wonder all sorts of anxieties will creep in... it can be wild out in the world!!! As philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurthi said, "it is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” More on all this later.

Honestly, making a couple videos and studying social anxiety for this Moon Times letter has given me much spaciousness and acceptance of this shadow, that is, the anxieties I've felt with socializing, speaking openly with more and more people, self-expression and intimacy. Creating videos is a way to challenge myself in using and sharing my voice more, speaking from the heart and channeling wisdom. Please let me know if it resonates and if you're interested in receiving more in the future! :D I can understand when people like Lilly Singh talk about healing her depression by making hilarious youTube videos; it feels good and necessary to express ourselves. Anxiety (and depression) takes away our freedom of expression, sucking out our peace and ease, in public or wherever. It makes us hyper-aware and hyper-sensitive to nuanced reactions and facial expressions; often with nasty, shameful and critical interpretations against ourselves. Mental illness is something we need to look at and speak more openly about, it's becoming increasingly critical especially in light of some recent public suicides of some of our most glamorous celebrities, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.

So, if social anxiety (and any mood or anxiety dysfunction) is in your life directly or indirectly, stopping you or someone you care about from being their brightest, loveliest and realest self, this one's for you <3.
Some teachings related to re-centering from social anxiety

Here, I'm channeling my sacred, wise and ancestral self as well as my education, training and experience. It's as much of a reminder for myself as it may be for anyone else. Hope you find some gems to take with you. /\

  • What are you trying to mask or hide?
  • What are you ashamed of? How do you cope with the shame?
  • What would you sacred conscious, ancestral and intrinsically wise self say to you when you're anxious?

Ladies, Lauren Ash of Black Girl and Om and I are holding space on June 27th and July 12th to do some self-exploration, in courage and community, of both our shadows and our light. We'll be gathering at Bodhi Spiritual Center for two separate yet related workshops incorporating the practices of yoga, mindfulness and expressive arts. Join us!

Come play with Kelsey Blackwell, writer, dancer & embodiment facilitator, and I as we cultivate the connection with our inner child.

We'll incorporate  meditation, interplay (an active, creative way to unlock the wisdom of the body with improvisational and intuitive movement and voice), and expressive visual art.

We'll gather at the beautiful and spacious headquarters of Interplay in Oakland.


Wellness & Healing Justice Jam:  a 5-day retreat for diverse workers and healers at the intersections of wellness and healing justice. We'll explore interpersonal and systemic questions like "what does healing mean to me?", "how do we create flexible co-learning communities as healers/practitioners across mediums, modalities and issue focuses?" and "how do we create an enduring support network of people using their healing passions for social change?"
