The National Housing Conference - 2019

Staff from Shelter SA will be attending The National Housing Conference in Darwin this week. The Conference is the largest gathering for the social and affordable housing sectors in Australasia. It will highlight innovations, leading edge practice and new ideas underpinned by the latest research. The unique experiences, challenges and opportunities of Indigenous people in the Northern Territory and around Australia also take a front seat.

Our very own Sorcha Walshe (Stakeholder Engagement Officer at Shelter SA) has been invited to give a presentation of our work on the challenges and opportunities in the private rental market for Aboriginal peoples. So if you are attending the Conference please come and see Sorcha's presentation at the "Opening Doors to Private Rental" session on Wednesday 28 (Day 1) from 3:30pm to 5:00pm (Meeting Room 3).

Our 360 Degree
Review (2/5)

The Board and Executive Director of Shelter SA wanted to gain a broad cross-section of stakeholder input into the performance and effectiveness of our organisation. The Executive Director proposed an innovative method based on the 360-degree concept traditionally applied to individual performance.

In the previous edition of Housing Matters, we showed you the results of our performance across seven key strategic areas. This week we highlight one of those areas - "Advocacy", which was nominated by stakeholders as Shelter SA's greatest strength. Some quotes from our stakeholders include:

“Strong in getting attention on issues through the media who will generally approach Shelter SA for a viewpoint.”

“Injects humanity into public policy considerations on housing.”

Policy was also seen as an area of strength for Shelter SA. Stakeholders commented that we provide “in-depth submissions to government and local Council” and that “evidence-based policy is essential as the basis for any advocacy”.

More to come in the next edition of Housing Matters!
