Save Our Suffolk Estuary Campaign Update

Since the launch of the campaign in October 2017, the Alde & Ore Estuary Trust (AOET) has received over £500,000 in donations, with further pledges of almost £1million from generous donors, charitable trusts and business supporters and which includes the proceeds from a host of community fundraising activities.

There has been an array of wonderful events in aid of the Save Our Suffolk Estuary campaign; from open houses and gardens, exhibitions and art sales, a wine tasting evening, a pub quiz and even a marmalade making competition! You will see some of these activities are featured in this newsletter and on our website, along with dates for future events for your diary.

It is great to see so many people get involved in such a wide range of ways. Thank you for your support and generosity in this important first year. We very much look forward to building on these early achievements with you as the campaign gathers momentum.

Please do get in touch with any ideas or suggestions that could help develop the next phase of our estuary campaign.

Fundraising Events
We have a host of wonderful fundraising events in the diary and you'll find full details on the Events page on our website HERE. In the meantime, below are a taster of a couple of events that are lined up over the summer months. Please support them if you can.

Our recent fundraising events have been hugely successful and we are enormously grateful to the organisers wanting to contribute and get involved.

A fantastic wine tasting evening in Orford Town Hall was enjoyed by over 100 people in April and raised an impressive £9800.
Jila Peacock's Sea Fever exhibition of her beautifully curated artwork at The Garage Gallery in Aldeburgh raised over £2500 for the Trust in May.

Update on works programme

The East Suffolk Internal Drainage Board (IDB) has received grant aid totalling £100,000 from The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust, along with contributions from Central Government and local landowners.

Based on the recent HR Wallingford report (2018) which has modelled the whole estuary and shown the Alde & Ore Estuary Partnership plan to significantly reduce flood risk to people and property, the IDB will be undertaking a fully costed programme of works detailing the schemes, designs and costs for the AOET which will be presented in the early Autumn. This work will inform the necessary business cases for government funding which we hope will allow schemes to start at Snape, Aldeburgh and Iken (Flood Cells 6,7, 10 and 5) in the Upper Alde estuary from 2019, following environmental mitigation. The IDB will also look for opportunities to undertake those works in parallel at some locations to expedite the reduction in flood risk to these communities. Some localised property protection measures may also be needed and the IDB are currently working with the Environment Agency on this.

Works will be planned for the other estuary locations during this period in order that consents and permissions are all in place to ensure a smooth pipeline of projects for the whole estuary, to be completed by 2025, subject to funding.

Once these costings and proposals have been scrutinised by the Alde & Ore Estuary Partnership Implementation Group, AOET expects to make further grants to continue progress on the walls in due course.
