Russian-American Relations: Present and Future
Anatoly Antonov, Russian Ambassador to the U.S., shared his view that, as major world powers, Russia and the United States are "doomed" to dialogue in order to try to solve some of the biggest global challenges.

Dan Edelstein

Dan Edelstein is Professor of French and History. He earned his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and came to Stanford in 2004. Dan's research is focused on eighteenth-century France, with interests at the crossroads of literature, history, political theory, and digital humanities. His recent book manuscript, On the Spirit of Rights, concerns the history of natural and human rights from the wars of religion to the age of revolution. Learn more about Dan's research.
Featured graduate student research: Jane Esberg
Jane Esberg is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science. Her dissertation research focuses on authoritarian repression in historical dictatorships, using new micro-data on political killings, political prisoner trials, and pop culture censorship. With the support of a research grant from The Europe Center, Jane traveled to Madrid and Salamanca in September 2016 and September 2017. Read more about Jane's research. Nicholas Branigan, Intern at Bruegel
While interning at the Brussels, Belgium-based think tank this past summer, Nicholas Branigan contributed to research projects on international economics issues. He reported on some of his findings on Bruegel's blog in a post suggesting that the "Falling Pound might not bring UK trade balance boost." The Europe Center, with the support of the Stanford Club of Germany, is sponsoring graduate student internships and research visits with German companies and research institutes in the summer of 2018. Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to cover the cost of travel and basic living expenses for the 8-12 week-long program. Noam Gidron, Princeton University, will discuss contemporary support for populist parties, which stems from a set of economic and cultural developments that have severed the connections that usually bind people to their society, making populism an issue of social integration.

Shaun Walker, Moscow Correspondent, The Guardian. In his new book, Shaun provides insight into contemporary Russia and its search for a new identity, telling the story through the country's troubled relationship with its Soviet past.
