Republicans stand by Trump. (Image:
CNN political analyst Carl Bernstein revealed through Twitter the names of 21 Republican senators who have shown “extreme contempt” for Trump behind closed doors but continue their cowardly façade to the American people of standing by their man – via Forbes.
Watch out, you shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, declares the Lord. This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, proclaims about the shepherds who “tend to” my people: You are the ones who have scattered my flock and driven them away. You haven’t attended to their needs, so I will take revenge on you for the terrible things you have done to them, declares the Lord. I myself will gather the few remaining sheep from all the countries where I have driven them. I will bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply. I will place over them shepherds who care for them. Then they will no longer be afraid or dread harm, nor will any be missing, declares the Lord.
- Jeremiah 23:1-4
It’s one thing to stand by your man, or woman, or person, but it’s another to stand by someone who has proven time and time again to care only for himself and for lining his pockets when your job is to protect the interests and well-being of the American people you vowed to defend.

The prophet Jeremiah reminds us that God does not take kindly to leaders who continually harm and scatter God’s creation, and that God does not give favor to leaders who claim to work for God’s people but really only look out for themselves. I imagine that God is especially displeased with those who espouse “Christian values” yet stand by a man who uses churches as photo ops and claims to possess a faith that doesn’t exist. These senators can express their disdain for the federal crimes and moral corruption of Trump behind closed doors, but what matters is what they are actually willing to do for the American people - which is frankly not much besides remaining captive to the flailing ideology of their political party.

As people of faith, it’s our job to remain diligent and at the ready to call out our leaders when they fail to shepherd God’s people in just and right ways. And while we remain in a period of unrest within the White House as Biden and Harris prepare for their transition to be our country’s next top leaders, we must continually hold accountable those who quietly placate themselves by condemning Trump's actions, yet fail to act on the injustices they allow to continue against the American people. They might have words of condemnation for Trump but as we all know, actions speak louder than words.
Words are a powerful tool. Take a few minutes out of your day to express your disappointment with those senators who condemned Trump in private, only to actively support him in his criminal actions. You can find a list of senators on the Senate website. Or you can call the Senate switchboard at (202) 244-3121 and ask to be directed to the Senate office of your request, where you can easily leave a message of disappointment.
God of leaders, we give you thanks for those willing to publicly call out our leaders who fail to do their jobs protecting your people. We give you thanks for our voices and ask that you would help us to use them. Usher in your justice into the world, through our words and actions. Breathe into each of us your breath of righteousness so that we might call out injustices publicly and not behind closed doors. Amen.
