Today's Top Story

“The Trump administration will admit no more than 30,000 refugees to the U.S. in the coming year, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, down from the current cap of 45,000.” - via Politico.

“Pompeo said the 30,000 cap 'must be considered in the context of the many other forms of protection and assistance offered by the United States' and should not be the 'sole barometer' to measure the country’s humanitarian efforts.”

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.  - Matthew 25:25-36
  • We are facing the largest global refugee crisis in recorded history, with 25.4 million registered refugees searching for safety. Currently more than 68.5 million people worldwide are displaced from their homes.
  • Today the administration announced what is known as the “Presidential Determination,” setting the maximum number of refugees that can be resettled in the US in the coming year at only 30,000.
  • For reference, when Trump took office the refugee goal was 110,000. Not only that, but the goal for this year was 45,000 - and we’ve only resettled about half of that.
  • This drastic limit of only 30,000 is historically low, extraordinarily heartless, deeply short-sighted, and breathtakingly prejudiced.
  • Refugees are integral to our congregations and communities, and our nation stands ready and willing to welcome thousands more. There has been a tremendous amount of pressure on Congress and the Administration to put the refugee admissions number at 75,000.
  • Honestly, the lack of support for the refugee program perplexes me. This has historically been a bipartisan effort and one that illustrated the United States’ role as a global leader. Abandoning the responsibility of providing welcome to refugees is not just heartbreaking and morally wrong but bad diplomacy and poor governing.
By law the White House has to consult with Congress prior to setting the annual refugee admissions number. This has not happened yet, which means Congress can and must weigh in today.

Tell both the White House (you can call their switchboard at (202) 456-1414 and ask for the comment line) and Congress (the Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121 – call and ask for your senator or representative) that 30,000 is inexcusable and that we must set a refugee admissions goal of at least 75,000.
Dear God – You exhort us to show welcome to the sojourner, to comfort the sick and weary, to love our neighbor. Please help us hear that call and please speak into the hardened hearts of our leaders. Let Your extraordinary welcome be that which we give to others. Amen.
