Trump Repeats Unfounded Claims About Mail-In Voting, Threatens Funding To 2 States - via NPR.

President Trump on Wednesday escalated his rhetorical campaign against an expansion of mail-in voting amid the coronavirus pandemic by threatening the federal funding to two states with Democratic governors. Trump appeared to be set off by an announcement the day before from Michigan's Democratic secretary of state, Jocelyn Benson, who said her office will mail an absentee ballot application to every voter in the state for August and November elections. In a tweet Wednesday, Trump falsely claimed the state was sending ballots, not ballot applications, and said its federal funding was at risk.
Where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. - Proverbs 11:14
There is a special kind of base depravity in politicians who want to limit access to the ballot box. I don’t believe that voting is the magical solution to all of our societal problems, but I do believe that it is an important tool for progressive activism. Although we’ve never fully lived into this value as a nation, the democratic process is one the basic building blocks of our country’s political identity. Even if they can’t agree on much else, can’t every politician seeking to serve in our democratically elected government agree that more people voting is a good thing? Clearly not.

And that’s not because of principled concerns over voter fraud or whatever other excuses they came up with. It’s because of a cynical, sinister desire for power overshadowing any commitment to our democratic values that they might have ever held. Allowing voters to vote by mail isn’t a left-wing conspiracy. It’s a reasonable, research-supported means of living up to the best aspirations of our democratic process. And it’s one that Christians have every reason to support.

From God calling 70 elders to assist Moses to the Council of Jerusalem deciding together how to welcome non-Jewish Christians, our tradition is rife with examples of the importance of communal discernment. The wisdom of an abundance of voices allows us to make faithful decisions together. During the time of the coronavirus and beyond, we should be finding ways to allow more people to vote, not fewer.
Senator Ron Wyden represents Oregon, a state that consistently outpaces the rest of the country in voter turnout, in part because of their universal Vote by Mail availability. Sign his petition to call on the Congress to make Vote by Mail available to all Americans
Holy One, keep this and all nations under your care. Bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. Help us elect trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and thus serve you faithfully in our generation, to the honor of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our sibling and savior. Amen.
