Today's Top Story
Yesterday, President Trump responded to the horrifying murder and dismemberment of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi by warmly embracing the government that ordered him killed. In a bizarre and disturbing statement, the President not only repeated Saudi propaganda naming Khashoggi an “enemy of the state,” but also praised Saudi investments in the U.S. and used them to justify remaining “a steadfast partner of Saudi Arabia to ensure the interests of our country.”
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. – Isaiah 5:20
Money Doesn't Justify Murder
From his warm embrace of Kim Jong-un to his ongoing deference to Vladimir Putin, President Trump has a sinful habit of ignoring the violence of authoritarian states that personally praise him, a willingness to ignore the crimes they commit. Even in the context of this troubling pattern, however, yesterday’s statement was harrowing. Our President laid out in plain English a foreign policy that is willing to tolerate clear evidence of murder - even of an American permanent resident - provided that the government responsible gives us money. In essence, Trump has named the price at which he’s willing to tolerate killing and dismemberment.
As if that weren’t enough, the President praised Saudi Arabia’s horrifying siege of Yemen - responsible for creating the worst human rights crisis in today's world, where 8 million people are currently on the brink of starvation. The arms sales that President Trump so gleefully praised have been used to bomb, among other targets, a bus full of children and a wedding. I honestly don’t possess language strong enough to condemn a man who can look at such carnage and see only dollar signs.
This is where we are: Our President has happily codified his immorality and greed into a simple, plainly written document, one which openly condones murder when it is profitable. This is evil of truly biblical proportions, the kind of legislative monstrosity that inspired the prophet Isaiah’s words. At such a time as this, God calls each of us to make a choice: Will we side with those who sell human life to the highest bidder? Or will we stand against our descent into darkness?
The Washington Post has been indefatigable in their investigation and defense of their murdered colleague Jamal Khashoggi, and in holding the US more broadly to account for our sinful complicity with the murderous Saudi regime. If you don’t already, consider subscribing today to help fund their important work.
God, deliver us from those who would sell lives for cash. Remind us daily that we must never allow this evil to become normal, nor give it any purchase in our own hearts. Be with the family of Jamal Khashoggi as they watch his government openly betray him. Hold them in their grief and anger. And work through each of us, Lord, to remove our own bloody despot as swiftly as possible from his ill-gotten throne. Amen.
