Now-former Navy Secretary Richard Spencer.
Yesterday, Wall Street businessman and former US Navy Secretary Richard Spencer wrote his official resignation letter after disagreeing with President Trump over the restoration of Chief Petty Officer Eddie Gallagher’s status. Gallagher was found guilty of posing with the corpse of a teenage ISIS fighter. Trump fired Spencer, through Defense Secretary Mark Esper, after Spencer spoke out against the Gallagher decision - via NBC News.
Her prophets have whitewashed everything for them, seeing false visions and making wrong predictions for them, saying, “This is what the LORD God says,” when the LORD hasn’t spoken. The important people of the land have practiced extortion and have committed robbery. They’ve oppressed the poor and mistreated the immigrant. They’ve oppressed and denied justice. - Ezekiel 22:28-29
In another not-so-shocking turn of events, one more in a long list of Trump’s henchmen has been forced to step down from his position because of his open disagreement with Trump. This time it concerned Chief Petty Officer Eddie Gallagher, who was court-martialed between 2018 and 2019 for war crimes. Charges against Gallagher included two counts of murder and three counts of obstructing justice. He was acquitted of these but found guilty of wrongfully posing for an unofficial picture with a human casualty - the offense in dispute that's now cost Spencer his job. After his guilty verdict, Gallagher’s rank was dropped, but it was later restored by Trump and confirmed through the president's infamous Twitter account.
But before we go rushing to Spencer’s defense, we can’t forget that he, like so many others who have been forced out of their positions with the administration, was another complicit cog in the wheel of Trump’s circus. The fact is that Spencer, like so many other of Trump’s accomplices, collaborated with the wrongful and harmful actions of the administration simply by agreeing to serve under him, first as acting Defense Secretary, and then as Navy Secretary. His willingness to be part of Trump’s injustices makes him one of Trump’s own.
The prophet Ezekiel speaks of the false prophets who have done harm to God’s people, who have lied and extorted the least of these. They have kept justice at bay and contorted it for their own benefits. While it might seem like Spencer is just another pound of flesh for Trump, his complicity in Trump’s circus makes him one of these same false prophets, not to be pitied for the injustice he is now facing, but rather found guilty of complicity in the hindering of justice for God’s people.
What do you know about the people in Trump’s circle? Take 15 minutes out of your day and do a little research on just who has been complicit in Trump’s injustices. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed with the sheer number of people involved because of the record-high revolving door in Trump's cabinet, visit the Brookings Institute to help sort through the changing cast of complicit participants.
God of prophets, help us to see through all the false prophets in our world. Give us wisdom to see the actions of those in power for what they truly are. Clear our eyes of the things that might blind us from seeing plainly, all those who are complicit in injustice and harm towards your people. Amen.
