Sen. Kamala Harris was one of the candidates who most impressed voters last week.
"Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris Looked Like Winners At The First Debates" - via HuffPost. "Last week’s Democratic debates gave Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) a platform to impress viewers and position themselves as credible opponents against President Donald Trump, according to a set of new HuffPost/YouGov polls."
“If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

“Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion - do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers - most of which are never even seen - don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes." - Matthew 6:25-34
How are you feeling after the first Democratic presidential debates? I was very anxious in the hours leading up to them. I'm guessing many of our readers felt the same way. Our anxiety is because we see how immoral and evil the Trump administration is, and we yearn for a better form of leadership in our country. The debates were the first taste of how Democratic candidates might take our righteous fight to Trump himself and, in the process, help bend the arc of the moral universe towards justice.

People's minds changed watching the debate, as Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren "won" their respective nights and benefited in polls that have come out since the debates. Are they your preferred candidates? If so, you're probably feeling pretty good right now. But here's the thing: it's going to be a long campaign and there will be ups and downs. I share these words today from Matthew's Gospel because I think Jesus was right to tell the disciples and us to relax.

Let's give our entire attention to what God is doing right now. God is inspiring so many people to oppose the evil of the Trump regime. Some of these God-inspired people are even running for president. Senator Warren said that her Christian faith "animates all that [she does]," and other candidates have also spoken about how their faith motivates them. And I know it motivates you. You resist Trump because of your faith, and though evil sometimes wins - we see that in the Gospel and we saw that in 2016 - we keep following God. We steep our lives in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions.

As the campaign heats up, we want to hear from you about what you want our writers to pay attention to and how we can best equip you for sacred resistance to Trumpism. Just click reply to this email and give us your feedback!
Reflect on how you're feeling about the presidential race in light of this passage from the Sermon on the Mount. Send us your thoughts! We ALWAYS welcome reader feedback!
Giver of Life, grant us the serenity as the Sacred Resistance to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and wisdom to know the difference. Keep our hearts and minds focused on what You are doing right now. Animate everything we do, so that we might co-create your kin-dom just as it is in Heaven on Earth. Amen.
