Today's Top Story
"Elliott Abrams, Trump's pick to bring 'democracy' to Venezuela, has spent his life crushing democracy," via The Intercept. "Abrams previously served in a multitude of positions in the Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush administrations, often with titles declaring their focus on morality. In these positions, Abrams participated in many of the most ghastly acts of U.S. foreign policy from the past 40 years, all the while proclaiming how deeply he cared about the foreigners he and his friends were murdering. Looking back, it’s uncanny to see how Abrams has almost always been there when U.S. actions were at their most sordid."
Ah, you who make iniquitous decrees,
   who write oppressive statutes,
to turn aside the needy from justice
and to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be your spoil,
and that you may make the orphans your prey!
What will you do on the day of punishment,
in the calamity that will come from far away?
To whom will you flee for help,
and where will you leave your wealth,
so as not to crouch among the prisoners
   or fall among the slain?
For all this, his anger has not turned away;
his hand is stretched out still. - Isaiah 10:1-4
America intends to brutalize Venezuela
  • To understand what is happening in Venezuela, start here with the NY Times and here with Vox. In essence, there is a long, complicated, and unique political history in Venezuela into which US interference and imperialist interest in Venezuelan oil asserts itself.
  • The Trump Administration is escalating tensions in pursuit of conflict and must be regarded with suspicion as it claims the cause of freedom.
  • There is a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, the result of years of President Nicolas Maduro and his corrupt administration running the economy and Venezuelan people into the ground, but the US is not a benevolent actor and has never been in South America. Any good done by the US has always been under the broader reality of imperial interest and control.
  • As the machine of American foreign policy continues to churn towards Venezuela, with weaponized economic policy and the threat of military intervention, we must not forget the Venezuelan people harmed in the process. We should remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's warning that racism, capitalism, and militarism are all inextricably connected and we should resist our government at every turn where it would operate abroad with the same disregard for everyday people as it does at home.
  • People of faith must demand that the US government turn from imperialist policies that wreak havoc in the lives of innocent people all over the world.
Call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and tell your representatives that you oppose US imperialism everywhere but especially in Venezuela and ask them to do what they can to resist it.
Loving God, we pray for the people of Venezuela and for their right to self determination. We pray for the safety of those caught in conflict and for the refuge of those fleeing violence. We pray that the function of the US as empire might cease and that imperialist foreign policy might fail. We pray for the end of war and against the escalation of political conflict into military violence, especially when it comes like breathing for our government. Forgive us when we avert our eyes from those with whom we are connected by our humanity, no matter where they may live. Amen.
