Family Separation May Have Hit Thousands More Migrant Children Than Reported, says the New York Times.

"Thousands of children may have been separated during an influx that began in 2017, before the accounting required by the court....

"Thus, the total number of children separated from a parent or guardian by immigration authorities is 'unknown,' because of the lack of a coordinated formal tracking system between the Office of Refugee Resettlement, the arm of Health and Human Services that takes in the children, and the Department of Homeland Security, which separated them from their parents."

So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O LORD, have given me. You shall set it down before the LORD your God and bow down before the LORD your God. Then you, together with the Levites and the immigrants who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the LORD your God has given to you and to your house. - Deuteronomy 26:10-11
Where Are the Children?
  • The family separation policies of the Trump Administration are morally repugnant, traumatizing on scales that should be unimaginable. They are a national shame.
  • Lest we become complacent: the family separation policies enacted at the border have deadly consequences. The Trump Administration admits but accepts no responsibility for last December's death in U.S. custody of 7-year-old migrant Jakelin Caal Maquin from Guatemala.
  • Migrant parents suffer too. A father from Honduras, Marco Antonio Munoz, died of suicide in US custody in distress over the traumatization of his family last June. The policy is difficult to analyze, but research shows that it is ineffective at best in its professed intention. It's not a deterrent. It's simply needlessly cruel.
  • A feature of the Trump Administration is lies on every possible level and public misinformation; we must remain vigilant and demand justice.
  • The case for Trump's impeachment is thoroughly and powerfully made in the Atlantic this week. It is time for Congress to choose: do they serve Trump or humanity?
Annunciation House in El Paso, Texas is shouldering a huge amount of the burden of Christian response to this inhumanity. Take a look at their work and donate if you can.
God of justice, if you are still at work in the world, we pray that you work in and through all means available to undermine the Trump Administration. May the regime fail in every attempt to dehumanize and violently harm those who are not white. We pray that xenophobia and racism are disarmed by good people given the courage to act justly. We pray that justice be made real in this life; that the lived experiences of those most harmed by the Trump Administration are revolutionized by love and wholeness here and now. We pray for the moral character to do something and to not be complacent ourselves. Amen.
