The Resistance Prays

Today's Top Story
After hearing news that Congress is not likely to dedicate billions of dollars to border wall funding, President Trump tweeted, “the United States military will build the Wall!”
And Mary said...
“He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.” – Luke 1:52-53
Stop the GOP War on Christmas
While Trump’s remark will likely be shrugged off as just another in a long series of unhinged executive outbursts, it’s worth examining this tweet more closely because it nicely encapsulates the absurd and dangerous worldview undergirding GOP immigration policy. The idea that, having failed to appropriate funds through Congress, the President would order the military to construct a border wall perfectly reflects their dominant perspective: that asylum seekers are foreign invaders from whom we need protection.

I have no idea about the potential legality of such a scheme, and I'll allow others who are more knowledgeable to address that. But we should all be ashamed by its deep immorality. In this season, we are called to remember that Christmas is - first and foremost - a complete inversion of unjust power. In the Magnificat, Mary talks explicitly about how Christ is born to usher in a world where the needs of the poor and marginalized are given central prominence, while the rich and powerful are sent away empty. It is impossible to celebrate Christmas while simultaneously oppressing the very people who Christ is born to uplift.
In a perverse way, it’s fitting that President Trump envisions the military building the wall, because he is waging nothing short of an all-out war against migrant communities. From family separation and detention and rejecting asylum seekers, to abusing and killing vulnerable people, this is a concerted, tactical effort to inflict maximum pain and suffering in the hope that people will no longer look to the US for refuge. It is a GOP War on Christmas, plain and simple, and it’s high time U.S. Christians fought back.
Contact your congressperson and tell them to fight any potential use of military funds to build a border wall. And, as budget negotiations continue apace, please sign this petition against using US tax dollars to hurt migrants.
Lord, you remind us that you sent your Son to end the unjust systems that harm your people. Do not let us forget - do not let us treat Christmas as if it were something that happened 2,000 years ago. Invite us again to celebrate Christmas this year by living into its revolutionary promise. We pray for your justice, to tear unjust tyrants from their thrones. Show us the true meaning of Christmas.
