Today's Top Story
"At the end of the day, we don’t want to shut down the government, we want to shut down the border” - or so says Sarah Huckabee Sanders (in a report from NBC News), in spite of the fact that just a few days ago her boss indicated that he would be happy to shut things down if Congress didn’t give in on the $5 billion Trump wants for a border wall.
Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. -  Ephesians 6:14
Don't Fight Dirty, But Stand Your Ground
  • Neither a government shutdown nor a border shutdown is a good idea. But compromising on funding for a wall is not a positive direction for Democrats, especially when Trump has already agreed to take the blame for a shutdown if he doesn’t get his way.
  • The most recent episode of the 538 podcast tackled the question about whether or not Democrats should fight dirty, since the Republicans seem to have no qualms about doing so. While I much prefer the “they go low, we go high” approach at least in theory, Democratic politicians need to do better in standing firm.
  • Standing our ground isn’t fighting dirty. It’s being consistent with the truths we profess to believe in - the truth of the humanity and dignity of all; the truth that what’s happening at our border is unconscionable as it is, never mind adding in a wall or a full border shutdown; the truth that those of us who call ourselves Christians know our spiritual ancestors were strangers in a strange land.
  • The painful irony of this threatened shutdown is, I’m sure, not lost on most of us reading these newsletters. Jesus' birth narrative - including circumstances that compelled him and his family to become refugees - stands in stark relief against the immigrant and refugee mistreatment currently taking place.
  • Democrats, both politicians and concerned citizens, need not “fight dirty,” but we do need to stand our ground, knowing that we are armored in the truth of the gospel.
Tell Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and your representatives to stand their ground, even in the face of a government shutdown.
Incarnate God, who became a refugee and dwelt among us, clothe us in your truth and righteousness. May we not use this embodiment to be self-righteous, but to rely on your strength and providence as the one who goes before us, behind us, around us, and within us as we fight for the dignity and humanity of all. Amen.
