Herman Cain, 74, an avid Trump supporter, has died of COVID-19.
(T. J. KIRKPATRICK / REDUX)

Herman Cain, former presidential candidate and open Trump supporter, died yesterday at the age of 74. Although the source of his illness can't be proven, he tested positive for COVID-19 nine days after attending a maskless, non-socially-distanced Trump rally in Tulsa. He had tweeted, “masks will not be mandatory for the event. PEOPLE ARE FED UP!” The tweet has since been removed. Here's an insightful article about his varied career from The Atlantic.

You’re going to find that there will be times when people will have no stomach for solid teaching, but will fill up on spiritual junk food—catchy opinions that tickle their fancy. They’ll turn their backs on truth and chase mirages. But you—keep your eye on what you’re doing; accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God’s servant. - 2 Timothy 4:3-4, The Message

The partisan connection against science and for Trump continues to kill individuals and will continue to wipe out thousands of people until we successfully get through to Trump’s base that wearing masks and following guidelines from the CDC is unquestionable. It is scientific, and it is our current moral obligation. Our disregard of science threatens the lives of us all, most exponentially Indigenous, Black, Brown, poor, elderly, and high-risk people.

We must go beyond following science ourselves. Everyone reading this newsletter understands the holy connection between scientific fact, public health, and our faith. What we must do is help those who don’t understand that connection begin to see that they are indoctrinated by an administration that spews a distorted, racist, elitist moral narrative, and that until we vote them all out, none of us is safe.

Register to attend “The Spiritual Crisis of Whiteness” with Faith in Action on Tuesday, August 11 at 7:00 p.m. ET. This will give us new talking points about how to dismantle much of Trump’s base.
Holy God,

God who loves science. God who delights in our truth-telling, God who calls us to courageous conversations: Put before us new ways to engage those who believe, vote, and behave differently from us. God, may our connection to that which is Holy and just connect us. May that which is wicked and untrue become so apparent to every person that we can do nothing other than imagine together a new way forward. We pray today, God, for every person suffering from COVID. We pray for new scientific revelations, new protections for health-care and all essential workers, new patience for caretakers, parents, those working from home, and those in financial distress, all results of the pandemic. God, we grieve every.single.life.lost. to COVID. In your mercy, Lord, hear our prayers. Amen.
