Today's Top Story
U.S. Will Send Migrants Back to Mexico as They Wait on Asylum Claims - from the New York Times. "The American secretary of homeland security, Kirstjen M. Nielsen, said the move would prevent people from using the asylum process as a way of slipping into the United States and remaining in the country illegally.

'Today we are announcing historic measures to bring the illegal immigration crisis under control,' she said. 'Aliens trying to game the system to get into our country illegally will no longer be able to disappear into the United States, where many skip their court dates.'

In a statement, she said, '‘Catch and release’ will be replaced with ‘catch and return.''"
Ah, you who make iniquitous decrees,
   who write oppressive statutes,
to turn aside the needy from justice
and to rob the poor of my people of their right,
that widows may be your spoil,
and that you may make the orphans your prey!
- Isaiah 10:1-2
Turning Aside the Needy from Justice
  • Trump and his cartel of GOP policymakers are bent on punishing innocent people fleeing violence and persecution under the intellectually dishonest guise of national security.
  • If you do not understand asylum, it is important to do so to fully comprehend what it means to send asylum seekers back to the places from which they have come.
  • The language used by Kristen Nielsen shows that neither she nor the regime in which she serves sees people fleeing from another country to ours as human. Nielsen refers to the process by which they are inhumanely sent away while seeking asylum as "catch and return," as if these people were animals.
  • It is not clear what we can do at this point beyond mass political mobilization and regime change through the democratic processes available to us, flawed and corrupt as they may be. We must persist.

God, we pray for the children, women, and men being sent back to places of violence and terror, though they have legally sought asylum from a country which once was proud to accept all those who might come seeking such solace. We pray for the children, women, and men being detained in camps in our own country, where they are being constrained, abused, and violated as we move through each day unaware. We pray for the failure of the Trump administration wherever the depravity of GOP policy might lead to the suffering and death of innocent people. We pray for the same when as much is true of liberal policy, which is far more often than we are willing to admit. Help us to follow the way of justice. Amen.
