In a First, Renewable Energy Is Poised to Eclipse Coal in U.S. –from CNN
For I am about to create new heavens
   and a new earth;
the former things shall not be remembered
   or come to mind.
But be glad and rejoice forever
   in what I am creating; –Isaiah 65:17, 18
Growing up in Appalachia, I saw neighbors and friends go to work in the coal mines and power plants. They made good money. But they were tired at the end of a shift; their bodies were broken and infected with disease, their jobs were dangerous. Eventually, the coal companies changed the way they mined – with dynamite and gigantic shovels – strip mining and mountaintop removal took away human risk and coal-burning power plants installed scrubbers to assure their neighbors that the residue from the smokestacks were safe. Or so they said.

Many of us have experienced cleaner air quality because fewer cars are being driven during the coronavirus pandemic, and electricity produced in coal-fired plants has decreased, too. This might not be a temporary situational fluke, but rather a greater, permanent trend away from coal and toward renewable energy.

While “Trump Digs Coal” was a rally cry in some parts of the nation (a reminder that coal isn’t just an Appalachian thing), America’s dependence on coal is decreasing and that is being noted by scientists, activists, and energy corporations. We hope it continues.
  • Learn more – and take advantage of – the solar energy tax credit.
  • Reduce your own energy consumption. Unplug your computer and phone and TV and major appliances every now and then (I’m preaching to myself here, too).
  • Advocate for state and local governments to invest in renewable energy.
God of all creation,

Bless us with the ability to discern your will and to care for one another and all creation. Amen.
