The Resistance Prays

January 3, 2019
By Rev. Perry Dixon

Today's Top Story
From the New York Times: Nancy Pelosi Elected Speaker as Democrats Take Control of House. “I now call the House to order on behalf of all of America’s children,” Ms. Pelosi said after she was sworn in.
Scripture
May she defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor. - Psalm 72:4
A New Resurgence Led By Women
As Elizabeth Warren faces the sexist obstacle of likability politics, women are taking back the House, beginning with Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

As the BBC reports: Ms Pelosi, 78, seized the gavel as the House welcomed more women than ever before in the 116th Congress.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is combatting constant sexism as well. But AOC is not merely a personality to be ridiculed by the propagandists at Fox News: she brings needed policies into the national conversation with courage and feasibility.

The 116th Congress is uniquely equipped to lead in a new direction, chipping away at the patriarchy still so entrenched in American politics.

It is only the beginning of a new era. We must wait and see if the hope will translate to liberation for the governed.
Act
Speaker Pelosi’s courageous stands include firm opposition to Trump's immoral border wall. While joining in that opposition, we also need to help build long-term momentum towards abolishing ICE. Follow the lead of DREAMers and sign this petition.
Pray
Loving God, we pray for Speaker Pelosi and for each woman in our country's 116th Congress. May each find the courage to lead, the perseverance to push beyond the bindings of patriarchy, and the strength to pull America into the better parts of its identity and conscience. Be with Speaker Pelosi, that she might know she is not alone in this. Amen.
