"Trump Administration Will Seek To Limit Green Cards For Immigrants Needing Public Aid" via NPR. "Immigrants who benefit from various forms of public assistance, including food stamps and housing subsidies, would face sharp new hurdles to obtaining a green card under a proposed rule announced by the Trump administration on Saturday."
“This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’ - Zechariah 7:9-10
Double Oppression
  • The Trump administration's new rule deals a double dose of oppression by targeting immigrants who are poor. Here are some of the programs that immigrants must refuse to use if they want to stay in the country: "Medicaid Part D, a prescription drug program for the elderly and disabled; the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); and Section 8 housing vouchers."
  • This new attack makes the Trump administration's view on immigrants even plainer: it's not just about limiting unauthorized immigration into the United States but limiting the amount of authorized immigration by enacting new restrictions.
  • Denying citizenship to poor immigrants reminds me of Mitt Romney's proposal when he ran for president in 2012: make life so difficult for immigrants that they will "self-deport."  Removing immigrants is unfeasible because of money and morality, so Romney wanted to replace the Statue of Liberty with a giant middle finger. Scaring future immigrants and making life miserable for those here would be easier than removing them from the country by force.
  • Immigrants and the poor are consistently set apart in our sacred texts for special concern, yet the Trump administration and GOP want to set them apart for special scorn. They target the most vulnerable in our society to score political points and rile up their conservative base. It's contrary to any interpretation of Biblical values and represents a core driver of the Resistance.

Liberating God, we confess our reluctance to stand in solidarity with immigrants and the poor, to see their hardships as our own. Give us hearts and minds that are focused on the most vulnerable in our society. Make us take responsibility for the conditions in our neighborhoods, cities, states, country, and world. With our gaze always set on resurrection, move us to action. Amen.
