"'Bernie Sanders Would ‘Ruin Our Economy,’ Says Ex-Goldman Sachs Boss," The New York Times reports. "Lloyd Blankfein warned on Twitter that Mr. Sanders was 'just as polarizing' as President Trump."
"How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!"
-Psalm 133:1
Do you consider Bernie Sanders '"just as polarizing" as Donald Trump? That's what ex-Goldman Sachs executive Lloyd Blankfein thinks. Let's take a took at the reasons why each of them is called "polarizing." Sanders is called "polarizing" because he calls for economic justice and blames the top 1% for rigging the economy in their own favor. The richest 0.1% take in 196 times as much as the bottom 90% in the United States. And over the past 50 years, the top 1% of Americans have nearly doubled their share of the total national income in the United States. Sanders has consistently focused on economic inequality for his entire career in public service. He seeks to unite Americans into a multiethnic, multiracial, LGBTQ-affirming, pro-women, pro-immigrant movement for economic justice. He's only "divisive" if you believe billionaires are a persecuted minority.

Trump is called "polarizing" because he brags about sexually assaulting women, locks babies in cages, bans Muslim, and gives huge tax brakes to corporations so that the 1% grow even richer. His entire campaign for president and tenure in office is marked by him trying to enrich the already rich and divide Americans by race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Today's devotional is not an endorsement of Sanders. If I voted today, he would not be my candidate. To be honest, I find some of Bernie Sanders supporters to be divisive online. This devotional is asking us all to see through attempts by the billionaire class to call him "divisive." There's nothing divisive about his message of economic dignity. Billionaires playing the victim card and equating themselves to the people targeted by Trump is ridiculous. Democrats, Independents, and even some Republicans who are not part of the 1% should be able to unite around the type of economic policies championed by Sanders and others in the Democratic presidential primary.
Don't give into the divisiveness of Trump or some in the Democratic Party who put down other Democrats for not supporting their preferred presidential choice. Add a bit of good to the world by posting on your social media accounts about the need for all Americans to unite around economic justice. If you or someone you know happens to be in the 1%, I invite you/them to join the movement and support policies like a wealth tax.
Holy One, we pray for a revolution of values in our nation in favor of economic dignity. Keep our hearts focused on unity, love, and justice. We confess the ways we sometimes veer into division, and ask your forgiveness. At the same time, give us strength to see through the lies of millionaires and billionaires claiming to be oppressed minorities. In everything we do and say and advocate for in the public square, may it be acceptable to you. Amen.
