We have big plans to equip even more Christians to resist Trumpism spiritually and politically—but reaching more people takes each of us pitching in a few dollars. Become a Patron of the Resistance Prays today.
This week New Orleans Saint quarterback Drew Brees pushed back against accusations of homophobia for supporting the “Bring You Bible to School Day” campaign by the notoriously anti-LGBTQ and Christian fundamentalist organization, Focus on the Family.

‘Being Christian is love’: Drew Brees defends appearing in video linked to anti-LGBT rights religious group –from Washington Post

“Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.”
–Galatians 6:7-10

This week New Orleans Saint quarterback Drew Brees pushed back against accusations of homophobia for supporting the “Bring Your Bible to School Day” campaign by the notoriously anti-LGBTQ and Christian fundamentalist organization, Focus on the Family. Brees, when questioned by the press, said he didn’t know the event had a connection to anti-LGBTQ messaging even though Focus on the Family clearly states their support of fundamentalist understandings of sexuality and gender.

Brees apologized and feigned unknowing. But those of us who are part of the resistance know that an apology is never enough.

Just like Drew Brees, we all have moments when our gusto for doing something good gets clouded. What should we do in these situations?

- Be so engaged with diverse communities that you know and understand why what you said or did was offensive and be open to transformation.

- Authentically apologize.

- Commit to doing better moving forward.

- Make reparations.

In light of Drew Brees’ action and inauthentic apology, we can take action to support those affected by Focus on the Family’s anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.

- Learn about The Trevor Project and encourage everyone you know to program their suicide hotline into their phone: 1-866-488-7386. Educate yourself about the connection between anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and likelihood of attempting suicide.

- If you know LGBTQ 14-18 year olds who need a safe place to understand their sexual and/or gender identity as it relates to their faith, check out The Naming Project, a great summer camp experience free from the rhetoric of many fundamentalist summer camps.

Divine One,

Help us to understand:

grace is not a free pass,

love means accompanying and allyship,

forgiveness and respect come with responsibility;

to journey from where we have been to the possibility of who we can become.

Amen.
