This week's hearings: many agendas, many reactions

In spite of a week of clear testimony regarding Trump’s wrongdoings, Republican members of Congress continue to perform the mental gymnastics necessary to stand behind their figurehead - via The Washington Post.

Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. - ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:1‬

"But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” - Matthew‬ ‭5:44-48‬ ‭

This has been an affirming yet frustrating week for those of us who are paying attention to the impeachment proceedings. Brave and patriotic individuals have testified with consistency about the unethical and appalling behaviors of the current resident of the White House. The frustrating realization that Republican members of the committee are not listening with objectivity, but instead listen with a predetermined goal of denying Trump’s obvious wrongdoing, can lead to a resignation that nothing will change.

Friends, let us not give up hope. While Republican officials may choose to stick their heads in the sand, many others in the GOP are appalled.

“Trump has control of the 202 branch of the party, and he has control of what remains of the party nationally,” GOP strategist John Weaver said, referring first to Republicans in Washington by their area code. “It’s not a party anymore in the traditional sense; it’s a cult.”

“Look, the case has been made. Almost everything in the impeachment hearings this week fleshed out and backed up the charge that President Trump muscled Ukraine for political gain. The pending question is what precisely the House and its Democratic majority will decide to include in the articles of impeachment, what statutes or standards they will assert the president violated,” says Peggy Noonan, a speechwriter in the Reagan administration.

Because we have been given this ministry at this time, in this tumultuous season, we do not lose heart. God is at work in the hearts of those on both the right and the left. The administration is being exposed for the evil it is.  We must have faith that this will bear fruit.

Contact members of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and remind them that their legacy will be that of defending the corrupt and criminal. Encourage them to do the right thing for the country, and not a party. Let them know that Republicans and Democrats alike see through their transparent sycophancy, and they will answer for it at the polls.
God of Justice, we confess that we can become frustrated to the point of resignation. We pray that you remind us in those moments that You are at work, and that the truths exposed will not be in vain. We pray that you speak directly to the hearts and consciences of those elected officials who are thus far holding firm in stubborn allegiance to a man who has clearly only acted in his best interest. Show them the path to do what is right, and to put the interests of our democracy ahead of their own. Amen.
