Today's Top Story
US-China trade truce seen boosting US stock market” via AP News. “The truce in the trade dispute between the U.S. and China should boost rattled financial markets, at least through the year’s end, experts say. But the stock market’s recent wild gyrations likely will persist as the two countries strain to reach a permanent accord.”
Scripture
“Oppressing the poor in order to enrich oneself, and giving to the rich, will only lead to loss.” - Proverbs 22:16
Stocks and Promises
  • While a momentary end to a superfluous trade war is good news for the financial markets, most of us are aware of the disparity between news that's good for the financial markets and news that's good for the rest of us. The stock market is not the economy, and the stock market's recovery since the Great Recession has not translated into a recovery for all.
  • With all the chaos in Washington under this administration, it's harder than ever to fight for smart economic policies that benefit us all, rich and poor. But as Proverbs tells us, those who do not care for the poor, those who only focus on the rich, will find themselves impoverished. We need economic and social policies that care for all of us, not just those who directly benefit from a bump in the stock market.
  • As Christians, we can greet financial news that profits Wall Street with welcome only when we can rest assured that those profits will benefit the poor in addition to the rich. Until then, it's our task to call for better use of our nation's wealth.
Act
The Poor People's Campaign continues to organize people around the nation in advocating for policies that will create jobs and help stop the rich from exploiting the poor. Check out their work here and follow them on Twitter to keep up to date with their work.
Pray
God, thank you for this momentary breather after months of unnecessary trade wars. Thank you for a break, however short, from the uncertainty and nervousness that came with this trade war. Yet we know that you call us to advocate for good use of the financial gift that this news brings. Strengthen us and renew us as we do your work on this Earth. We pray this in the name of Jesus the Christ, whose birth we eagerly await - Amen.
