With four historic famines raging worldwide, there are 795 million people on this earth who suffer from hunger and food insecurity, the Religion News Service reminds us in their opinion piece, What Does Having a Meal Mean for Our Souls? “To compound the catastrophe,” the piece continues, “the Trump administration recommended cutting the Global Health account, which funds nutrition programs around the world, by 37 percent in its 2017 budget proposal. Thankfully, through bipartisan consensus, Congress is restoring the funding and is even considering increasing it by $20 million. This is the first increase for nutrition in over a decade.”

"This is how we know love: Jesus laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. But if a person has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need and that person doesn’t care—how can the love of God remain in him?” – 1 John 3:16-18

Abundance Giving
  • Our Thanksgiving traditions and Black Friday activities here in the US give us an opportunity to reflect on how we live out our beliefs about food, money, and God. As we gather with our friends and family to celebrate our lives together, how are we using the abundance that many of us have? What does God call us to do?
  • I’m not begrudging us the restoration and self-care that might come out of this holiday time; far from it. It is difficult to give when you find yourself spent. But I do want us to remember and remind ourselves that when the love of God abides in us, when God remains with us and dwells with us, we who have goods in this world will share them with those who do not.
  • God urges us to give out of our abundance. I’m sure that we will all consider how we can do that on a local level as Giving Tuesday approaches, but we can also urge our government to give out of our national abundance. By restoring funding to the Global Health account, we in the US are caring for those in need in Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia, and Nigeria. It’s just a part of our fight against food insecurity everywhere, part of the way of we can see the needs of others and strive to meet them, giving what we can as long as we can.

Contact your members of Congress to ask them to support the bipartisan increase of funding to the Global Health account.

God of abundance, we are thankful for the gifts you have given us: the good earth, all that lives and grows upon it, and your abiding love in our hearts for one another and for all creation. Help us to care for and nurture the gifts that you have given us and to share with those around us out of our abundance. Lord, you give us more than enough. Stay with us and urge us always to share what we have with those who need it. Amen.
