Today's Top Story
It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and - in case you’ve been living under a rock for the last month - the 31st day of Trump’s government shutdown. (This handy shutdown clock's from Politico). To make matters worse, Mike Pence continues to masquerade as a Christian by perverting MLK’s own words to defend the inexcusable actions of Trump and the GOP (from NBC).
For Zion’s sake I won’t keep silent,
and for Jerusalem’s sake I won’t sit still
until her righteousness shines out like a light
and her salvation blazes like a torch.
Nations will see your righteousness,
   all kings your glory.
You will be called by a new name,
which the Lord’s own mouth will determine.
- Isaiah 62:1-2
Let's Remember Dr. King Better Than Mike Pence
Mike Pence has proven once again that he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing when it comes to his faith. In his latest remarks, he wrongfully uses Martin Luther King’s own words to support the GOP’s dreams of a border wall, while Trump prolongs his government shutdown like a tyrant toddler with his fast-food banquets. All the while, thousands of Americans and their families are forced to struggle for rent, turn to shelters for food and resources, and work without the hope of pay anytime soon.
As the prophet Isaiah stated, we cannot be silent, and we cannot just sit around waiting for something to change while injustice continues from our national leaders. We have to speak out and act. Pence wants everyone to “come to the table in the spirit of good faith.” But we all know he, Trump and the GOP can’t be trusted. Their idea of good faith is one that causes God’s people to suffer. So, instead of going to a tyrant’s table, go to the tables that are empty and help those affected most by the government shutdown.
So, while you’re sharing your favorite Martin Luther King, Jr. quote on social media, remember to do better than Mike Pence. Share your quote, and then go out and do something about it. Make the difference in the world where our president, Mitch McConnell, and the entire GOP refuses to. If the Rev. Dr. King were here to see this, I can guarantee his cries for action would ring louder than any church bells.
Wondering what to do on this MLK Day to live out your faith? Here are a few things you can do to show that not all Christians are wolves in sheep’s clothing:
O God, make us willing to do your will, come what may. Increase the number of persons of good will and moral sensitivity. Give us renewed confidence in the nonviolence and the way of love as taught by Christ. Amen. (A prayer of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.)
