Has this devotional grounded your resistance to Trump in Scripture and empowered you to act for the common good? If the answer is "yes," then please help us reach more progressive Christians. Become a Patron today.
We are 100 days out from the election that will send a signal to Trump and authoritarian regimes around the world: enough.
"US course at record low, Trump sinks on virus," the Associated Press reports. "With the November election 100 days away, more Americans say the country is heading in the wrong direction than at any previous point in Donald Trump’s presidency, putting the incumbent in a perilous position as his reelection bid against Democrat Joe Biden enters a pivotal stretch."
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits." - Matthew 7:15-20
My neighbor offered me a yard sign for Amy McGrath, the Democratic nominee for United States Senate here in Kentucky. I knew that accepting the offer was the right thing to do as a matter of Christian social ethics. There is no doubt in my mind that McGrath would better represent the social-justice priorities of Jesus that guide my political values better in Congress than our current senator, Mitch McConnell. I haven't put the sign up yet, though. Why? Because I'm still grieving Charles Booker's loss in our Democratic primary. I've been involved in Democratic politics my entire life, and I've never met a politician more inspiring than Charles Booker. His narrow loss in the primary was heartbreaking.

I felt similarly about Elizabeth Warren's loss in the Democratic presidential primary. But after a long, hard-fought primary, former Vice President Joe Biden emerged as the Democratic nominee. Biden was not my first choice, but he has my wholehearted support now. I sense a lack of enthusiasm in my social circles for Biden (and here in Kentucky, for McGrath). So my message for you today is simple: get pumped. We are 100 days out from the election that will send a signal to Trump and authoritarian regimes around the world: enough. The Trump administration must end. We have seen the fruit of Trumpism and it is rotten. I'm sure everyone reading this newsletter knew it would be. But now we have proof for all the Americans who argued that his behavior would be more "presidential" in office.

While anti-Trump sentiment will motivate many voters, I'm also writing to express my cautious optimism about a Biden administration. The Bernie-Biden task forces have created policy recommendations that would make a Biden administration the most progressive in American history. The Biden platform is far more progressive than the Obama 2008 and 2012 platforms. That's largely due to the grassroots movements holding our leaders accountable and pushing them in the direction of human dignity. What fruit will the Biden administration bear? I can't guarantee you. I can promise you I will be right there alongside you if and when actions of the Biden administration fail to live up to our values. But I'm optimistic. I'm nearing excitement even. It's more than relief that I won't wake up each morning wondering what awful thing the president has tweeted. It's a belief that our nation can accomplish a great deal for the common good under a Biden administration.

Writing today's devotional has helped me get to a place where I'm ready to put up the McGrath sign. Not there yet on Biden excitement? I understand. But with 100 days left until the election (and much less until early voting begins in many states), I implore you to do all you can to get yourself ready to vocally support him. Let's never abandon our principles, but take it one election at a time together.

Holy One, Guide every action, every policy position, every vote, and every word we offer in the public square. May each and every one, all that we do, be acceptable to you. Amen.
