The Oil Mist Detector (OMD) has been a safety feature on diesel engines for many years. Classification societies, manufacturers and customers alike, have found them to be beneficial to their operations.
Oil Mist is generated in the crankcase by the constant vaporization and condensation of lube oil reacting with a hot spot in an engine. This resultant oil mist develops a larger surface area and a reduced flash point, increasing the possibility of it igniting when it comes in contact with a hot spot.
OMDs detect the high levels of mist generated in the engine by these hot spots. When these excessive levels of oil mist are detected, the oil mist detectors send an alarm signal allowing the engine to either be slowed down or stopped.
