An engine is a precision component and any little deviation could result in a major incident like a crankcase explosion that could severely damage the revenue generation prospects of a vessel. The Swedish Club, an organization with a focus on marine insurances, marine safety and loss prevention released, on January 8th of this year , a statement about marine safety.
“An investigation by The Swedish Club into auxiliary engine damage has revealed that the majority of all damage takes place immediately after maintenance work. A key finding is that 55% of casualties occur within only 10% of the time between overhaul (TBO), corresponding to the first 1,000 hours or so of operation after overhaul. In most cases the damage occurs only a few hours after start up.” ( Source: https://www.swedishclub.com/main.php?mcid=1&mid=111&pid=50&newsid=2083)

The report highlights the presence of incorrect maintenance and wrongful repair in many cases, as well as poor lubrication management , which was also a major contributing factor to a number of these engine breakdowns.
Poor lubrication can lead to hot spots within the engine, creating oil mist. The early detection of high levels of oil mist in an engine by a Schaller Oil Mist Detection (OMD) unit can lower the risk of severe and dangerous engine damage and reduce repair costs.
Early detection gives enough time for the engine to either be slowed down or stopped, preventing further damage and potential risks.
Peter Stålberg, Senior Technical Adviser at The Swedish Club was also quoted as saying, “We see with an average repair cost of more than USD 345,000, we cannot emphasize enough the principle that prevention is better than cure.”
Take advantage of our Spring Offer of Free Inspection to ensure your Schaller Automation Oil Mist Detection unit is in optimal condition this Chinese New Year.
