Turner Farms &
The 2020 Pumpkin ReHarvest
Mark your calendars! Our annual Pumpkin ReHarvest is coming up on two occasions this year: November 7th from 10-2 at Lucky's Southgate Mall & November 10th from 4-7pm at Imagine Nation Brewing. Come one, come all, come mushy, droopy jack-o-lanterns leftover from Halloween! Instead of sending away your pumpkins to the landfill, opt to drop them off with Soil Cycle during one of these events.
Say, what does Soil Cycle do with this mountain of rescued pumpkins?
Will they end up in my delivered compost next year?
Can we fit that many pounds of pumpkins in our compost heaps?
What happens to these pumpkins anyway??

I'm sure glad you asked! Read on...
In the spirit of giving and of saving composting space, we deliver the pumpkins from our annual ReHarvest to Turner Farms, a local family-owned operation located in the Orchard Homes neighborhood. Here, the family feeds the pumpkins to their goats, chickens, and pigs for a tasty gourd-flavored buffet...just in time for Thanksgiving! All those vitamins in the pumpkins greatly benefit the animals through the cold winter.
A happy goat at Turner Farms munches on pumpkins that were delivered from Soil Cycle's Pumpkin ReHarvest last year.
Before our own composting operation was up and running, Turner Farms graciously accepted our collected food scraps as feed for their farm animals. Yes, that's right - our members' kitchen food scraps from past years were actually "recycled" by goats, chickens, and hogs! Now that's a quick and easy way to deal with food waste. 😅
Exploring the actvities at the Turner Farms Pumpkin Festival a few years ago.
One of Turner Farms' major events is their pumpkin patch and Annual Pumpkin Festival. In past years, visitors have enjoyed strolling down their fields in search of the perfect pumpkin - in addition to the festival's attractions such as farm tours, animal petting, apple cider-pressing, and adorable photo-ops for kids (think tiny toddler on giant tractor). While the farm has altered the event slightly this year, the pumpkins are still up for grabs. We encourage you to purchase your pumpkins from Turner Farms this season - when you bring them to our Pumpkin ReHarvest, we will return them from whence they came! A true example of giving back to Mother Earth...hyperlocal style.
Soil Cycle Turns 3 This Year!!!
Three years old! We are now entering a phase of growth and development, of education and learning, of early mornings, daily tantrums and potty training - ahem...those last few might better characterize a human 3-year old.

In November of 2017, Caitlyn - our founder, turned executive director - began operating Soil Cycle from her rental home. Over these three years, Soil Cycle has transformed into a non-profit with a board of directors, expanded to more and more subscribers in more areas of Missoula, acquired an operations facility near Free Cycles, begun composting on our own, and preached the gospel of sustainability and composting to people far and wide.

Happy birthday to us, and THANK YOU for your support to make this dream come true!

As a thank you for all your support, we are releasing a free virtual medicinal plant guide featuring plants at our demonstration garden! Check out our Facebook for all the details!
Tanya's Soil Cycle Mural
We are so excited that our beautiful mural is finished! This work of art is an awesome representation of our passion for soil health and sustainability. It can be seen for several blocks as you approach Soil Cycle on West 1st street and its will way-finding signs help direct visitors to surrounding businesses. Tanya Yarrow, the talented muralist, is a co-owner of The Giggle Box, a new experiential art museum in Missoula. Check out Tanya's other projects at
Got Leaves?
We are offering small-small leaf collection every Wednesday in October and November! We will provide you with paper yard bags and once they are full, let us know and we will come pick them up for a small fee per bag.

Both your leaves and bags will get composted in 2021!
(We are not taking other yard waste.)

Please fill out this form if interested.

Partnership with MUD:
Saving Rain

With the help of builders at the Missoula Urban Demonstration Project (MUD), Soil Cycle installed a rain barrel catchment system at our space this month.
We are thrilled to add this sustainable feature to our demonstration
garden and to further our permaculture efforts!
Check out the video below about the project produced by MUD.
Volunteer with Soil Cycle!
Fall is a busy season in the composting world. Do you have some free time to help us with one of our projects? Do you want to help out your community and complete the food circle? Do you want to connect with like-minded people and get hands-on experience? We have an opportunity for everyone. Email to get in touch with us.
  • Building, Turning, and Sifting Compost: We always need help managing the increasing amounts of organic materials coming through our gate. We're looking for volunteers on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
  • Fall Leaf Collection: Every Wednesday in October and November This is the first year we want to offer leaf collection to our members. Collecting leaves will help divert more organic material from the landfill and help us with brown materials all year. We need help planning and managing this program. Preferably someone with a truck will be excited to help once a week in November.
  • Pumpkin ReHarvest: Sat, November 7th and Tues., November 10th: Each Fall we collect dilapidated pumpkins and make sure they head to farms not the landfill! We need help planning and "manning" these events. If you are an artist, we'd also love a photo cut out for this family fun event.
  • Basic garden maintenance and cleanup
  • Lumber organization
  • Seed saving and packaging
Upcoming Events
Fall Compost Give-Back: October 17th from 11-3pm
