Spreading Hope to the Nation

3 December marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities and we are proud that the UAE continues to make great leaps in inclusiveness by drawing out the best in People of Determination.
A number of our healthcare programs, including Ta’alouf, focus on empowering people of determination and earlier this year we were honoured to receive the Princess Haya Award for Special Education.
Sport is a great way to engage the community and this year’s 7EmiratesRun drew overwhelming participation honouring UAE National Day whilst celebrating its mission to get children back on their feet. The Dubai Women’s Triathlon marked a pioneering movement in women’s sport and we were proud to be the charity partner of the first of its kind event in the region.
Aligned with our mission to promote inclusion in all areas of life our Ta’alouf family has grown to over 700 carers using best practice to nurture children with special educational needs. Together, we will continue to empower children to live to their full potential. This is our promise to the children of the UAE.

Transforming Lives
Mohammed receives life changing limb.

15 years ago Mohammed was involved in a devastating car accident which resulted in the amputation of his right arm. As a very active young man who played many sports, the loss of his arm came as a painful blow leading to despair and loss of confidence.
Through Al Jalila Foundation’s iMcan program Mohammed received a specialist prosthetic arm with an electronic function specifically designed for him by German Limbtech.
Mohammed expressed his happiness “My dream for 15 years has come true. Al Jalila Foundation treated me like family, and words of gratitude will never be enough to thank them for their never-ending support.”
To date, Al Jalila Foundation has supported more than 25 patients, including 7 children, and invested over AED 1.5 million to empower individuals through its iMcan program.

Inspiring Innovation
Dr Ammar leads Autism Spectrum Disorder research.

Dr Ammar Albanna, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital, is leading a prospective study of UAE children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with a distinguished research grant from Al Jalila Foundation.
There is a pressing need to better understand the unique genetic causes of ASD in the UAE and observe the patterns of treatment sought by parents. The study paves the way for future comprehensive studies to assist in identifying the genetic underpinning of the ASD which will have significant implications including prevention, healthcare systems and individualised treatment.
The research enhances understanding of genetic, clinical and socio-demographic variables associated with ASD in the UAE, discovers current treatment patterns and eventually help implement strategies to improve access to evidence-based effective treatments. The approach includes standardised diagnostic methods to comprehensively assess children with ASD.

Shaping the Future
Ta’alouf empowers children of determination.

Al Jalila Foundation welcomed 152 new Ta’alouf parent and teacher graduates now equipped with knowledge and skills to better support their children of determination.
One of the graduates, Sultan Siddique Ali a father of 3 children with autism (all non-verbal), expressed how their family has benefitted from the course.
“Ta’alouf was an extraordinary experience, from the trainers, the course materials, the supportive atmosphere to meeting other parents with the same challenges. Ta’alouf is life changing and our life and that of our children has become so much easier and we hope to be an encouragement to others parents. We have special children, but we are also special parents.”
Since 2014, Ta’alouf has empowered more than 500 parents and 206 teachers in the UAE with each one of them acting as inclusion conductors to benefit thousands of children of determination.
Ambassadors of Hope
#TeamAlJalila triumphs in the first Dubai Women’s Triathlon.
The ‘Year of Giving’ marked the first Dubai Women’s Triathlon with all proceeds dedicated to support women with disabilities and provide them with prostheses. More than 250 women participated of which 100 were Emirati and many were first timers to the sport of triathlon.
#TeamAlJalila participated with 3 relay teams which included people of determination, Sara and Warda racing in their wheelchairs and Zainab cycling with a prosthetic leg. The event brought together women from all walks of life and shone a light on what can be achieved when opportunity and determination meet. The Dubai Women’s Triathlon was a celebration of inclusion in sport and life.
The victorious team expressed their pride and happiness at being part of such a pioneering movement, the first of its kind in the region. Zainab Al-Eqabi, who up until the week before the triathlon had not cycled since the age of seven, documented her triathlon journey and “the beginning of a new passion”.
