Dearest Friends of Albertine,

Come and celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight with me & Albertine!

One of the joys of being Patron of Fairtrade Foundation is I’ve had the opportunity to visit various smallholder producers all over the world, getting up close and personal with some mind-blowingly tasty ingredients and listening to the farmers’ stories. My job then is to come back and spread the word, talk about what I’ve seen and how being a part of Fairtrade really does change lives, not just for those who sell their produce into the Fairtrade market but for their whole communities. Peanuts straight from the ground in Malawi, wine grapes on the vines in South Africa, bananas in St Lucia, and the olive, almond and spice growers in Palestine -I’ll never forget the people I met and their brave and deeply humbling stories.

So we were thrilled to host the official launch supper of Fairtrade Fortnight here last Monday night with the great and good of the food world (check out Instagram!), and now we invite you to Albertine to do your bit for world equilibrium: it’s not exactly tough, just rock up any time this week and order our specially featured Fairtrade wines, and dishes we’ve come up packed with Fairtrade ingredients.

Allegra's (& Bassema's) Warm Palestinian Maftoul Salad

My visit to the West Bank in 2016, and especially the fascinating and fun day spent in the kitchen with farmer Bassema Barahmeh learning how to roll maftoul (like a bigger couscous but made out of bulgar wheat), is the inspiration for the Palestinian Maftoul Salad we’ve put on Albertine’s menu for Fairtrade Fortnight. It’s wholesome and fresh, dressed with the green goodness of Fairtrade olive oil from Zaytoun with a crunch of roast almonds and za’atar to finish it off.

We’re also running an almond, orange & chocolate cake for the fortnight, made with Fairtrade almonds, chocolate and sugar from small-scale family farmers who have been supporting local schools with equipment and materials with the extra money they receive from the Fairtrade premium.

Say Cheers the Fairtrade way!

Rob has selected two excellent quality and great value wines from Fairview vineyards in the Western Cape of South Africa, where workers now have training opportunities, better houses and shares in the farm itself.

So how about raising a glass of the aptly named Liberty Shiraz, or a crisp, appley and slightly tropical  Liberty Chenin Blanc. Available by the glass, bottle and take-away too.

Get some Fairtrade Karma
For the softies out there, we’ve also got the real, real thing – my favourite Karma Cola is made with Fairtrade sugar from Malawi and real cola nuts from Sierra Leone, where Karma Cola is working with eight communities to rebuild their lives after a ten year civil war and ebola outbreak a few years ago – right now they’re literally building bridges to connect remote communities. We also have Karma’s fiery Gingerella and zingy Lemony Lemonade.

Also look out for Fairtrade when you’re shopping too! Take a look at Fairtrade’s website to find out about the products, the farmers and the difference it makes!
Wishing you a very happy Fairtrade Fortnight
and thanks for all your support!

Allegra & the whole Albertine team xxx
