Ferragosto X Albertine
Scintillating Sicilian Wine Tasting
Wednesday 15th August
Our Rob is just back from a visit to Cantine Rallo, who have been producing fine wines in Western Sicily since 1860.
Andrea Vesco and his wife Irene took the helm of this ancient house in 1990 and turned the viniculture to completely organic and partially biodynamic agriculture. Being based in beautiful Marsala their speciality has always been the wine eponymous of this town, both in the sweet "Superiore" version and dry "Vergine" version, similar to dry sherry.
Andrea & Irene have also branched out expanded the range to include dry wines made with grapes indigenous of Sicily such as Grillo, Cataratto, Nero d'Avola and Perricone, and also produce one of the cleanest orange wines we’ve ever tasted. Using only natural yeast in the air of the cantina, left to ferment at its own pace, then matured in acacia wood barrels, this is the perfect example of the kind of work that this creative and adventurous winemakers have been doing both in the vineyard than in the cellar.
Their wines regularly win awards in Italy’s most prestigious guide, Gambera Rosso, and count various royal families around Europe as their customers.
Ferragosto is the peak of summer for Italians ... just another excuse to have a day off and go to the beach since 18BC when emperor Augustus decided to make it a national holiday.
So what better way can there be to spend it than drinking and learning about some fine Italian wines!
That's why on Wednesday 15th August we'll be offering this very exclusive wine tasting.
