It’s hard to believe that it’s already October—maybe because we’ve spent the first weeks of the school year busily working on behalf of our kids, or maybe because of LA’s perpetual sunshine.
Either way, the school year is off to an exciting start—especially with my resolution to provide grants at co-located campuses, co-sponsored by Board Vice President Goldberg and passed unanimously by the Board this week. I believe in common-sense solutions like this resolution, and I’ll continue working in the spirit of collaboration to benefit all kids in this district.
Keep scrolling for that and more—including my resolution to take district action against climate change, a National Blue Ribbon school honored in my district, a successful first committee meeting, and a productive day of service across LA Unified.

Student Spotlights:
A Blue Ribbon School & the Movement to Go Green
I was thrilled to celebrate with everyone at Fairburn Elementary, recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School! Congrats on this huge achievement!
Bravo to all the students in LA and across the world who walked out on September 20 to demand action on global climate change. We are with you!
At Your Service: UCLA Volunteer Day Comes to Board District 4!
I joined hundreds of volunteers at Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet and Westminster Elementary to help with school beatification projects for this year's UCLA Volunteer Day! We painted, planted, and more, all for our schools! Has your school done a beautification day? Let us know so we can highlight it here!
Listening and Learning:
Our Latest School Visits & Community Meetings
It was great to meet Orville Wright MS's new leader, Principal Calhoun, sit down and hear from parents both at Westport Heights ES and the greater Westchester area, and catch up with Principal Hunsberger at Katherine Johnson STEM Academy.
I also marched alongside parents in Southeast L.A. for Speak Up's first "Peace Walk" to promote unity among families from all types of public schools, regardless of immigration status.
I was proud to join Mayor Garcetti and the First Lady of LA, Amy Elaine Wakeland, at this year's Women Move LA event and had so much fun supporting the arts in our schools at the P.S. Arts Gala!
