Dear friends and partners,

Summer is in full swing, but that doesn't mean our work slows down in Board District 4! Over the past couple months, we voted to end random searches for LA Unified students while studying the best ways to continue keeping our kids safe, passed multiple resolutions, including one to raise awareness about safe gun storage, approved our district's budget, and pushed for a comprehensive strategic plan that will allow the district to align resources to priorities and evaluate how well it’s serving kids
.

Read on to see the priorities we are tackling, the students, teachers, and partners we are recognizing, and the festivities we are celebrating before we gear up for the new school year in August!

Keeping up the work (and fun) during summer break!

I was incredibly inspired by students Faye, Sunny, and Naije'e who are a part of NFTE Los Angeles, and who pitched their start-up ideas, EcoSoap and Big Gurls Move, before the Committee of the Whole this summer. I wish them the best of luck representing LAUSD at NFTE’s National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge in New York City this October!

Congratulations to all of our LA Unified Teachers of the Year, and a special shoutout to the honorees from Board District 4: Ms. Thornton from Loyola Village ES, Ms. Weisberg from Topanga ES, Ms. Yonemura from Hesby Oaks, and Ms. Infante from Taft HS! Thrilled to celebrate and recognize the great work they do for our kids!
I was also excited to recognize our Westchester-Playa Vista community partners, and the incredible commitment of the Rotary Club of Playa Venice Sunrise, the LAX Chamber Education Committee, the LAX Coastal Education Foundation and the Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa Vista Education Committee to public education. Under the leadership of Gwen Vuchsas and Michele Cooley-Strickland, we're working together to do everything we can to celebrate and support the great things happening in our schools.
The only thing better than one 4th of July parade is two 4th of July parades! I was proud to join the Westchester and Palisades communities to celebrate America’s history as a country of immigrants—as true today as it was in 1776! ‬
