The Kids First Newsletter:
April 30, 2019
Dear friends and partners,

With just about six weeks left in the school year, we've been busy making sure our students, families, and school communities are prepared to finish out the year strong!

Make sure to learn more about Measure EE by RSVP'ing to our office's next "Digital Town Hall!”

We've fought for our constituents and taxpayers by ensuring that there is an independent Oversight Committee for Measure EE parcel tax funds. We've also led the Board to put our support behind increased options and funding for early education for our youngest learners. And read on to check out the new LA Unified mobile app (the fruition of my first major Board initiative)!

Priorities in Practice: From the Boardroom to the Classroom
L.A. Unified Board passes parcel tax independent oversight plan
Last week, the Board passed five resolutions that I either wrote or co-sponsored—including the two above. Click here to see a full list of all the resolutions I have written or co-sponsored since joining the Board!
There's an app for that: One of my first initiatives after taking office was to create a one-stop shop LA Unified mobile app to modernize the district's communications approach and make two-way communications with parents and schools easier. I'm thrilled that the app is up and running—and already has thousands of users! Click here to learn more about what the LA Unified App can do for you!
Putting kids first means providing our schools with the resources they need: since taking office, we have funded $119,587,404 in projects to directly benefit schools in my district—including new Chromebooks at Grand View ES through our Board District 4 Bond Grant Program!
Check out this year's Bond Grant Program and encourage your school leader to apply!
Listening & Learning: Board District 4 in the Community
This school year, we have held over 80 parent and school community meetings, engaging and seeking the input of all our stakeholders in order to meet the needs of our families.
Recently, I met with parents and staff at Toluca Lake Elementary, Santa Monica Blvd Charter Elementary, Brentwood Science Magnet, and had Assm. Autumn Burke  (D-62) join me to meet with parents at Mark Twain Middle School
I also helped kick off "Melrose Mornings" with the Fairfax community and partners, and joined Communities in Schools to celebrate their work supporting and empowering our students to achieve success!
Learn more about Measure EE: Join the conversationRSVP to our next Digital Town Hall where we will answer questions and share updates about the district's local revenue measure!
School Spot-L.I.G.H.T.S.: Venice High & Brockton Elementary
Check out this snapshot of Venice High, one of our district's Biliteracy Award winners! LA Unified is proud to offer many multilingual programs, including five different language pathways at Venice!
I was thrilled to join Brockton ES to celebrate the school's 100th anniversary and even happier to announce that we will be funding their new play structure through our Bond Grant Program!
