Dear friends and partners,

This may have been a short week, but it was still a challenging one in LAUSD. From the climate crisis triggering a record heatwave and nearby wildfires, to a nefarious cyberattack targeting our data systems – the District has been working tirelessly to protect our school communities and provide uninterrupted instruction to our students.

While the District’s recovery efforts remain ongoing, this week reminded me yet again just how resilient and dedicated our students, families, and employees are. Teachers pivoted lesson plans, administrators took attendance manually, federal partners came to our aid, and staff worked around the clock to mitigate the impact of both the heat and the hack.

As we work to keep classrooms cool, systems safe, and kids learning in LAUSD, we will undoubtedly face new challenges along the way. But we will continue to focus on driving progress, supporting schools, and doing whatever it takes to ensure every student can reach their full potential.

Onward,

In the Spotlight: A familiar face starts new chapter at Gardner Elementary
The school year is off to an exciting start at Gardner Street Elementary! The school just rolled out their Arts Integration Magnet program, and also welcomed new Principal Rebecca Cabrera! After teaching at Gardner for almost two decades, Cabrera is thrilled to take on this new role in a place that feels like home. She returns after working as an EL Instructional Specialist & World Languages and Culture Specialist for the District's Division of Instruction and looks forward to bringing the insight and experience she gained to drive progress for the school community. And after I had the chance to welcome Principal Cabrera while visiting Gardner this week, I'm looking forward to supporting her success in this new chapter!
