March 2, 2018 – SheDecides Day

A Day to Stand Up and Speak Out to Say Yes, SheDecides. Without Question.

On March 2nd 2017, global leaders banded together behind the rallying cry of SheDecides to defend girls and women’s rights to control what happens to their bodies, their futures and their lives. One year later, there will not just be one event in one country – there will be hundreds, in many shapes and sizes, all over the globe. By standing up strongly and speaking out loudly, it sends a clear message that every girl and woman should be able to decide whether, when, and with whom she has sex, falls in love, marries or has children.

For this to happen – as friends of SheDecides, you are invited to plan and participate in events in your local area on March 2nd. Toolkits to help you will be available soon – but in the meantime, start getting creative and think about how you might participate. Think everything from a concert, a rally, a dinner party, a panel discussion, an art show, or anything in between.
Friday, March 2nd 2018. SheDecides Day. Mark it in your diary. Watch this space for more details!
Potential Impacts of the Global Gag Rule Greatly Expanded
Nearly 1,300 non-governmental organizations that provide healthcare to women and families in no less than 91 countries will be affected by the new and expanded version of the Global Gag Rule. As much as $2.2 billion in funding may be at risk according to a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

In many of these countries, abortion is legal under certain circumstances, but under the GGR these NGOs will not be allowed to counsel on or provide abortion. NGOs that work in HIV/AIDS would be most impacted, followed by Maternal and Child Health and Reproductive Health and Family Planning. Read the full study here
Champion Spotlight

Lina Abirafeh, Director, Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World, Lebanese American University
This week’s Spotlight is on SheDecides Champion, Lina Abirafeh, who is Director of the Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World at the Lebanese American University. Lina has spent over 20 years working on Gender-Based Violence prevention and response in a range of humanitarian and emergency settings.

This is where she came to understand that more than many other emergency services, women and girls need to protect and control their own bodies first. Today she works to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment through the intersection of academia and activism across the 22 Arab countries.
Lina laments on the state of gender equality in the Arab region – one plagued by patriarchy, and the rising power of conservative movements. The message of bodily autonomy is urgent here. But in spite of the challenges, she is hopeful about the future. ‘I have to remain cautiously optimistic – with a belief that equality is possible, even if it doesn’t materialize in my lifetime. I will keep finding every possible way to do it – from my work to my activism to my writing and whatever other means available to me…we MUST get to a future where SheDecides’ she says. ‘And to do so we need to take the anger that has been simmering and turn this into action’. Inspiring collaboration – A Call for Proposals
The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) has launched a call for proposals for inspiring examples of collaborations across sectors designed to improve women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health. This is a great opportunity for organisations that work to ensure that SheDecides to pitch their proposals to the Partnership.

Twelve proposals from low, middle and high-income countries will be selected and widely profiled, promoted and disseminated through traditional and digital media channels.
The deadline for proposals has been extended to January 21st 2018. Details can be found here

Becoming a Friend of SheDecides by signing the Manifesto places you at the heart of our goal— to promote, provide, protect and enhance the fundamental human rights of every girl and woman to decide. As a friend, you sign the manifesto to commit that you will bring your personal energy to this movement— your drive, your anger and your influence as an individual citizen. Together we stand up, speak out and drive change to create a new normal: where every girl and every woman can decide what happens to her body.

‘We are putting money into the services that Trump is trying to stop.'

Watch SheDecides Co-lead, Robin Gorna talk about how the SheDecides movement has grown into a global political movement working to protect and promote the fundamental rights of women and girls everywhere to own their bodies.

Speaking to France 24 Journalist Anette Young on the program 51%, Robin called on more individuals and governments to join the movement to fight for a world where SheDecides. 'No one should play with our bodies and play with our lives...women all over the world are Standing Up and Speaking Out and saying 'this is my body and it is my choice who touches it, and what I choose to do with it'

Quote of the Year “SheDecides: A Conspiracy of Hope”
Kate Gilmore, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights

2017 was one rollercoaster of a year. On 21 January, millions of women and men around the world walked in the Women’s March. On 23 January President Trump signed the expanded Global Gag Rule. The very next day, Dutch Minister Lilianne Ploumen announced the creation of SheDecides and put €10 million on the table.
Since then, we have moved from having those two words as a uniting rallying cry, to a successful conference on 2 March, to a movement with a crystal clear manifesto, signed by 40,000 Friends and 140 organisations.

SheDecides now is led by 36 Champions from all over the world, ranging from ministers to youth leaders who alongside our Friends are committed to Standing Up and Speaking Out, Changing the Rules and Unlocking Resources (€ 390 million so far!).  The time has never been more right to work together to create a new normal: a world where every girl and woman can decide what to do with her body, her life and her future. Without question.

The SheDecides Support Unit wishes all the Friends and Champions a very happy 2018 - filled with action, so that #SheDecides!
