At the Fund, we calculate several statistics about the work we do when there are oil pollution incidents from ships or boats and when we receive claims. It also includes actions we take to make polluters pay for the damage caused. In order to make the information easily accessible, we want to continue to share the data that interests you and that would be useful to you.

RECENT EVENTS
ARCTICNET VIRTUAL ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING 2021
December 7: Our legal counsel, in collaboration with a representative from Transport Canada, delivered a presentation in the session: “NPD50 – Maritime shipping in the Arctic: Observations, management, and adaptation”.

The presentation called “’Who Pays for an Oil Spill? Compensation in the Arctic” covered the Fund’s claims portfolio for incidents in the Arctic.

Over the past 32 years, while more than a dozen incidents were monitored in the Arctic, the Fund only received three claims. Less than $92,000 was paid out to claimants, representing 0.35% of the total amount paid from the Fund (over $26 million).
PRESENTATION AS PART OF THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA’S CO-DEVELOPING COMMUNITY RESPONSE INITIATIVE
 
November 30: our marine expert, in collaboration with a representative from Transport Canada, gave an online presentation, as part of the federal government’s Co-Developing Community Response initiative. The following questions were answered:
  • Who pays for an oil spill in Canadian waters?
  • How can you access compensation from the Fund?
  • How does the Claims Process work?

ArcticNet Virtual Annual Scientific Meeting 2021
7 décembre: Notre avocat, en collaboration avec un représentant de Transports Canada, a présenté un exposé à la session ayant pour thème [traduction] « NPD50 – Le transport maritime dans l’Arctique : observations, gestion et adaptation ».

L’exposé intitulé [traduction] « Qui paye les frais d’un déversement d’hydrocarbures? L’indemnisation dans l’Arctique » portait sur les demandes d’indemnisation faites à la Caisse à la suite d’incidents survenus dans l’Arctique.

Au cours des 32 dernières années, bien que plus d’une douzaine d’incidents aient été observés dans l’Arctique, la Caisse a reçu seulement trois demandes d’indemnisation. Moins de 92 000 $ ont été versés aux demandeurs, ce qui représente 0,35 % du montant total payé par la Caisse (plus de 26 millions de dollars).

  • Comment être indemniser de la Caisse?
  • Comment fonctionne le processus d’indemnisation?
