Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome to our second week at Alert Level 2. The weather has not been kind to us but it will be good to see some water back in the dams! A huge thank you to our wonderful parents for continuing to support our health and safety procedures by dropping your children at the gates - and thank you for providing them with raincoats and umbrellas to keep them dry on the way up to their classrooms.

There may be some families in our community who are still anxious about their children returning to school. We would like to reassure them that schools are a safe place to be:

- Freyberg Community School is safe. Even though there is such a low risk of the virus getting through the school gates to begin with, we will be keeping up our hygiene practices and other public health measures as an extra precaution for as long as we are in Alert Level 2.

- Instances of COVID-19 in New Zealand are extremely low.

- We are aware of concerns that people without symptoms may be able to spread the virus. The Ministry of Health have advised us that there is no instance in New Zealand of someone spreading the virus without ever having symptoms.

- The return to school has gone really smoothly and it has been brilliant to see how excited the children have been to get back to their learning and social routines.

- We know some of our families are still feeling a bit anxious about sending their children back to school, which is understandable given everything we have been through these past 2 months.

Over the past week we have also been alerted to social media content that is wrong and upsetting to parents and caregivers. This information implies that the Public Health Response Order Law passed on the 13th of May gives powers to Police and others to uplift children from school if they appear unwell and forcibly test for COVID-19, and administer medication including the flu vaccination.

Neither Police, Oranga Tamariki nor anyone else have been given such powers. If a child is unwell at school, we immediately contact their parents or caregivers in the usual way to collect them. We would like to reiterate that this is usual school practice with any sickness and will not change.

We urge you to get in touch with us if you still have concerns about health and safety at school. We are really keen to have all of our children back at school learning and having fun with their classmates as soon as possible - it is really important that children return to school, not just for their education but also their health and wellbeing.

Thank you all for your continued support and understanding. As always, if you have questions or comments please contact your child's teacher directly, or the school office at admin@freyberg.school.nz.

Noho ora mai - stay safe,

Maria Dopheide

Principal

A Message from the Office...

We are enjoying our second week back at school and it is great to see our students and New Entrants settling into "The Grove" (Room 3), enjoying being part of the Freyberg family and making new friends. Below is a friendly reminder of what our "new normal" looks like while we are at Alert Level 2.

School management have decided not to allow parents/caregivers or other visitors on site for the remainder of the time that we are at Level 2.  This is to ensure that any contact tracing required will be as straightforward and as simple as possible. The  only exception to this rule will be for parents of students who are newly enrolled at our school (for example, New Entrants who started on 18th May and New Entrants starting on Tuesday 2nd June), if there is an emergency, or if a visitor has received clearance from school staff.  Any parent/caregiver who falls into this category will be required to sign in and out at the office for contact tracing purposes. There will be staff at each gate to offer assistance if needed.

If you need to contact the office for any reason - to ask any questions or inform us that you are keeping your child at home -  you can do so by calling us on (09) 8389664, texting on 027 364 7271, or emailing admin@freyberg.school.nz.

It has been noted that student absence follow ups have resulted in parents saying that they had informed the class teacher that their child would be away.  We would appreciate parents not sending attendance notification  to the class teacher via SeeSaw/Google Classroom.  If the class teacher is absent due to sickness, attending a course or is on classroom release this information regarding your child will not be passed on in time for us to update the twice daily attendance records..  Notification of all absences must be sent direct to the school office by using the school app, texting, calling or emailing.  We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

Community Education after school classes have been cancelled for the remainder of the term and Linda Konik, the Community Education Director, has been in touch with all families concerned to discuss rescheduling/refunds for all classes cancelled this term.  We have also been informed by Duck n' Dive that the school pool is closed until further notice.

Warmest regards
Mrs Prins

A Message from Jodie at the Lunchroom

Did you know that the lunchroom sells toasted sandwiches for just $2.00?

Options available are cheese or ham and cheese
and are certainly a nice change in this cooler weather!

Please note that NOODLES and PASTA are NOT AVAILABLE this term.
Can you help?
We are in need of assistance to replace the box that holds the toys by the sandpit.  The plastic box unfortunately has not held up and we are wanting to replace this with a sturdy, wooden box that is suitable to remain outdoors.  Please note that the picture above is an example of size but not final design.  If you are a builder, know a builder who could quote or are a handyman with experience please contact the school office on (09) 8389664.
Yummy Apple Sticker Collection

Please keep collecting your Yummy Apple stickers and coupons from Yummy Fruit and their bags (bought at Pak 'n' Save, New World and Four Square). We are able to trade these for FREE SPORTS GEAR! Just stick them onto any piece of paper and we can attach them to a collection sheet in your child's classroom.

Thank you in advance for any support you are able to give!

We are making these available to all children in Year 4 to 6 classes, on an optional basis this year.  All of the Australian School Competitions provide an opportunity for all students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation.

Competitions are available in the following areas:
Digital Technologies, Science, Writing, English, Mathematics and Spelling.

Each child who sits the examination will receive a certificate and a detailed results letter. Cost for all online exams are $17.50 per subject.  Please note that exams will only go ahead if we have 3 or more students wishing to attend a particular subject.

Should you require further information and would like an exam registration slip please ring the office.

If your child's exam does not go ahead any money paid will be refunded.  Payment can be made direct to the schools bank account  as follows: 12-3071-0231432-00. Please note your child's name and ICAS as a reference.

Last day for all registrations is Friday 3rd July.
