Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Happy Samoan Language Week! This year's theme is "poupou le lotoifale ola manuia le anofale" which means "strengthen the posts of your house, for all to thrive".

Next Tuesday Freyberg Community School will be closed to students and parents for a Teacher Only Day. Staff will be onsite developing our localised curriculum. This means we are using elements of the NZ curriculum document to design a framework which is unique and responsive to the priorities, preferences and issues of our community and our people.

We regret to inform you that from today we have had to temporarily close the Freyberg school pool due to some health and safety concerns.  We are currently working with the Ministry of Education to assess the condition of our school buildings and plan for any maintenance that may be required over the next 10 years. This is a standard process all schools go through to ensure they get the support and guidance they need to manage their property.  An engineer has investigated the structure of the pool which has produced some uncertainty around the main steel roof structure which has some areas of corrosion, and this needs to be checked more thoroughly to ensure the building is safe to occupy.
The Board of Trustees met last night when this new information came to light and unanimously agreed that to keep our community safe it would be best to close the pool while further investigations are carried out by the Ministry of Education. We apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused to our community of swimmers and Duck n Dive, however, the safety of our students and everyone who uses our pool must be our top priority.

As we head into winter we are starting to see a lot of sickness in our staff and students. Please continue to follow good hygiene practices and keep children home who display cold and flu symptoms. As always, anyone with these symptoms should ring Healthline or their local GP.

Noho ora mai - stay well,

Maria Dopheide

This term classes have been given the opportunity to take part in the HELL Pizza Reading Challenge, which is being run in conjunction with the 2021 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.

The Hell Pizza Reading Challenge is a highly successful programme that gets kids reading and enjoying the pleasures of books with free pizza rewards.

Classes participating have now received their "pizza wheels"  and every time a student finishes a book, the wheel gets clicked off. Once complete the wheel requires a school authorisation stamp (available from the office) on the reverse of the wheel enabling them to redeem their free pizza.

A great reading challenge with tasty rewards!
A reminder from the school office to all of our whānau members...

Sending someone other than yourself to collect your child during school hours?
Please contact the office ahead of time and advise staff of the new arrangements.
Please note that NO CHILD will be released unless the office has been informed by the primary parent/caregiver noted on the school student records.
We are excited to share the news that Freyberg Community School will be welcoming the NZ ice skate tour to our school hall! This will be taking place on the night of Monday the 6th of September. We sold out of tickets last week so the ice skate tour have very kindly added on earlier time slots which are selling out fast - so get in quick. The school receives 20% of takings after the event so it is a great fundraiser for us! All students will receive an ice skating lesson during school time so it's a great opportunity for them to show off their new skills.
