Dear Parents/ Caregivers

This is our last newsletter of 2020. This has been a particularly difficult year for our community but we are immensely proud of how our learners have displayed resilience and empathy throughout. I think we have all gained a new perspective on what is really important in life - spending time with loved ones, and having the freedom to go where we want and when we want. On that note, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the people who are special to us and who have helped make Freyberg a happy and successful place to be this year, by playing a critical role in ensuring that our children are receiving the very best educational opportunities that we can offer them.

A big thank you to our departing Board Chair, Avinesh Pillai, who has been such a competent and supporting leader. Avinesh has been working behind the scenes on the Board since 2013 and as Board Chair since 2016. He will be sorely missed for the expertise he brings, his friendly and calm manner and his unwavering support and belief in the school.

Thank you to the members of the Board - Alex Lau, Ruth Osborne, Bevan Weir and Nick Simmons. Their support genuinely does affect the quality of what happens here at Freyberg Community School. They are doing a great job as Trustees and really looking after the staff and students at Freyberg.

Thank you to our Senior Managers Emma-Lea Graaf and Matt Allely. They have supported me through my first year as Principal and their expertise, collegiality and support contributes greatly to the effectiveness of the school and the happy culture we enjoy at Freyberg.

Thanks to our Team Leaders Natasha Carlielle, Matt Reyland, Tess Hickling and Vikki Pearson. Under their leadership we have seen real data and supported academic progress demonstrated throughout the school. Thank you to our teachers who deliver quality teaching and learning whilst still incorporating fun activities into their programmes. Their positive attitudes are reflected in the positive children who attend our school. I am immensely proud of the fact that despite lockdowns, more and more being asked of them through the curriculum and the general uncertainty of 2020 that they have remained focused on the core business of teaching and learning. This is reflected in improved academic outcomes and a happy school culture.

Thank you to our office staff Juliette Prins, Sharon Callaghan and Rachel Temu. I know that you will all agree that they deserve special acknowledgement for their caring, capable and welcoming approach. I also acknowledge them for their support and organisation throughout 2020. They, along with our fantastic support staff, add such great value to what happens here at Freyberg. We have fabulous Teacher Aides working with us here - Molly Ong, Claire Buchanan, Melanie Spackman and Hannah Kelly - thank you for being such talented, happy and supportive staff members. Our children are very lucky to have you.

Thank you too to our Community Education Director Linda Konik, and our caretaker Merv Dingley - both capable, flexible people who add so much to our school family.

Our Fundraising Panel is in the midst of a refresh but I still want to thank all of the members of our community who have volunteered their time this year to help raise funds for us - they are all proactive and vibrant people who allow teachers to access top resources, sports teams to have better equipment, and children to play on great playgrounds. They are pivotal in providing a better standard of education for our children and we are very appreciative of the time and energy that they put into our school.

2020 has been an extraordinary year with COVID-19. The level of parental support has directly impacted on the quality of education and opportunities our children receive. We continue to see lovely, spontaneous and happy children attend Freyberg and this makes us all really proud to be part of this exciting, busy, and happy school. It is really important to us to acknowledge our parents and whanau at this time, as without your efforts and your commitment to your family’s partnership with our school, the challenge of students learning through lockdown would simply have been too great.

Thank you to everyone in our community for your support throughout this difficult year - teachers, parents, students and the rest of our community. Even though it has been a rough year, it has still been successful and productive for our students and for that we are really thankful. On behalf of Freyberg Community School, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Xmas and a safe and happy holiday.

See you all in 2021!

Warmest regards

Maria Dopheide

An Important Update from the Office

Scholastic Orders - 2/3 deliveries has arrived this afternoon and will be distributed today to students concerned.
ICAS  Exams - Certificates have been posted by ICAS Australia and are on their way from Australia.
Photolife Studios Class Photographs - proof photos have been checked and confirmed for print yesterday and we are expecting them to arrive before the last day of school.
KIDS ARTWORKS -  are still being created by the  company involved - they have been informed of our last day at school and we will distribute these as soon as they come to hand.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Kind regards      Mrs Prins
We are super excited to remind our families about our KINDO online school shop which opened earlier this year.

Downloading the KINDO App allows you to purchase school uniforms and team stationery packs.  The KINDO school shop is open 24/7 and available on our school website and through the App, making it easy for you to complete payments and purchases when it suits you!  We are aiming to become a cashless school in the future so your support is appreciated.

Please note -
Stationery packs & all uniform items to be purchased for 2021
will be available to order from 1st January.

At the end of each term and especially after school events (school camp, trips off site, mufti days etc) we always have a mountain of unnamed clothing (uniform and mufti), hats, drink bottles, lunchboxes and shoes turn up in the office looking to be reunited with their rightful owner.  Returning these items is easier if they are adequately named.

In addition to these we appear to have an ever increasing collection of toys and treasures being brought to school.  As outlined in our school prospectus we do not encourage this practice. It creates a large amount of stress to students when toys and treasures have gone missing and we appreciate co-operation in this matter.

Please note that all lost property is held in the school office and will be put out on the junior syndicate courts by the sickbay weekly for all to view and hopefully claim :) Any items unclaimed will be forward to the Salvation Army collection bins on the last day of term.
Many thanks to those students who have now returned their school library books.

With just over 150 books still outstanding we would appreciate parents and caregivers having a quick check at home.  Any located books can be dropped into the school office.

With just a few more days of school left, it would also be appreciated if you could return any school resources, journals or reading books  to your child's class teacher as soon as is practicable.

Many thanks in advance!
