Staff Corner

Linda Gavron

Linda Gavron pictured in the middle, Thanksgiving 2018.
Currently, my job title is Facility and Rental Manager, which means that I am responsible for the care and maintenance of our facility and private event rentals. Most recently, however, you will recognize me as, “Hi, this is Linda, and I’m calling on behalf of Vintage House Senior Center.”

That’s been my mantra for the hundreds of phone calls I’ve made to Vintage House members while working from home over the last several weeks offering a cheery “hello and how are you doing today?” and asking if there is a need for grocery shopping or prescription pick up. Overwhelmingly the response has been “I/we’re doing fine,” followed by kind words of appreciation and gratitude for our Vintage House team and all that’s happening here to assist our senior population. It’s been very gratifying to personally connect with so many individuals that I’ve befriended during my 16 years of employment.

Like so many of our 65+ population, I’m right there with you and have cabin fever! At age 70 and feeling fit and active, my reaction to being told that I am at risk and need to stay home is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Many of our members have expressed a desire to volunteer but are aware that the age restriction is a roadblock. I am quick to remind them that by “sheltering in place,” they ARE helping - hugely - by keeping themselves safe and healthy, thus reducing risk to the community.

While I am at heart a homebody, this is overkill. I’m keeping busy cleaning out closets and drawers and places I never thought to clean. (I’ve amassed quite a collection for the Vintage House share table!  We might need a second table!) I love crossword and Sudoku puzzles and find that they keep me entertained and thinking. My neighbor and I walk daily and have discovered a family of three snapping turtles at the lake we circle. They have become a highlight of our walks, and we smile and chuckle as we approach their sunning spot on the rocks or watch them gently dip into the water. My friend has aptly named them Snap, Crackle & Pop.

I am trying to practice patience and mindfulness for all of my blessings, and mostly I am at peace, except when I’m freaking out. I really need someone to invent an alarm system that will only allow me to open my refrigerator three times a day and for only 30 seconds so that I cannot cheat!

Love, Linda

Shelter in Place with a Good Book!

Join Vintage House’s Virtual Book Group

Love to read but have trouble finding the time?  Now is your opportunity!

Vintage House’s first Virtual Book Group will be reading The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See and discussing via Zoom (computer or telephone accessible).  This New York Times Bestseller is available in paperback at Reader’s Books.  They have several copies in stock now and can order more.  The e-book is also available through the Sonoma County Library.

Set on the Korean Island of Jeju, The Island of Sea Women follows Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls who are best friends that come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger.

Despite their love for each other, Mi-ja and Young-sook’s differences are impossible to ignore. The Island of Sea Women is an epoch set over many decades, beginning during a period of Japanese colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s, followed by World War II, the Korean War, and its aftermath, through the era of cell phones and wet suits for the women divers.

Please contact Denise Wilbanks at denise.wilbanks@vintagehouse.org or 707.485.9346 if you will be participating in the book group so that she can send you an invitation to join the ZOOM book discussion on May 1st.  Happy reading!
