October 2020 Bulletin

Annual Members Exhibition
These Times: Philadelphia Center for the Book Members’ Exhibition
Exhibition website launch: October 23rd

For this year’s Members’ Exhibition, the Philadelphia Center for the Book wants to know: how have you responded to These Times? What work, in book form or not, have you made since the start of 2020? This work might be a direct reaction to the events of the world, or a response to your changing environment as you have sheltered-in-place. However world events have affected your life, they no doubt have influenced your creative process.

The online exhibition will launch on October 23rd. Look out for more information soon!
Free Library Workshop Series
Book Arts Workshop: Building with the Map Fold with Claire Marcus

This workshop, originally scheduled for May 9th is now scheduled to take place outdoors, weather permitting, at the Lovett Memorial Library of the Free Library of Philadelphia, in Mt Airy. Facial covering is required to attend and social distancing will be observed.

Bring your prints, drawings, altered pages, or decorative papers to combine into stars, extend into chains, or create pop-up elements.  Pages can be nested and combined with found objects for sculptural effects. Options for covers and closures will be presented. No previous book art experience is required. Materials will be provided.

Claire Marcus has a special interest in landscape’s power to evoke memory and narrative.  Her work in book formats and mixed media is created with printmaking and drawing, stitched with found objects. Increasingly sculptural in form, it reflects her background as a fifth generation fiber artist, synthesizing family heritage with training in painting and architecture. Marcus holds MFA and BFA degrees in painting and a BA in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.

The workshop is part of a series made possible by a partnership between the Free Library's Art Department and the Philadelphia Center for the Book to bring free book arts workshops to Parkway Central from September to May. Space in these very popular classes is limited; please let us know in advance if you will not be able to attend after you have registered so that we can release tickets to those on the waiting list
